HP5+ at 3200iso in D-76?

Got some HP5 for free this week, not my prefered film, but I am experimenting with pushing it to 3200. Shot 2 rolls of it this week, now need to process it.

Using D-76 (only developer i have availible at the moment) what tiem should i use? I could use the times for straight D-76 and a 1:1 dilution.

I've never pushed this film past 800, but according to the MDC, you take the 7.5 min. time in D-76 1+0 and multiply it by 4.5X for a 3 stop push. That gives you a time of 33.75 min. Kinda long! You may want to get some Micrphen or another dev better at pushing. Time in Microphen would only be 16 min. X-Tol would be 17.5

Test rolls are advised.

Thanks, 30min is a bit long. The lab i work in only provides D-76, but I may buy some Acufine from a co-worker, should get it down to 20min.

Andrew, I haven't heard of anyone using HP5+ at such a high push. Are you aware of Rollei R3?

Yeah, I normally would not push it this far. Like i said before, this is just an experiment, got some free film, decided to try something new.

Just processed a roll yesterday that I pushed to 1600 (first time I had done this). Used D-76 stock for 12 1/2 minutes as recommended by Ilford HP5+ literature. I was quite pleased with the results. I shot a roll of 35mm at my son's birthday party, which was indoors, rather low light, with a bunch of 7 & 8 year olds running around. I found the negs to be rather good for the intended purpose (3x5 prints), not too contrasty nor grainy. Unfortunately (as you probably already have found out) Ilford does not give any times for D-76 at 3200. Also no times given for 1:1 at 1600. Maybe try stock for 16 to 18 min +/-?? Keep us posted on your ultimate choice & the reuslts. What was your subject matter?

Subject matter was just some friends and such shot during a incredibly dimly lit party, wasn't worthy enough of a subject to use my normal film stocks so it was time to experiment with some other stuff. I'll be processing this week, either with D-76 or Acufine. I'll post if it was a success or failure.

So it looks like I have a range of 16-33min in what should work for straight D-76. Wide window, I'll probably just go around 23min and see what happens.

I've seen this done before; the time was about 25 - 20 min in D-76 stock. They looked similar to Tri-X at 3200, though, IMHO, didn't look as good.

D-76 works, but probably isnt the best developer for the task.

Don't push film. If possible, it's always better to use a faster film. When you push film you lose shadow detail and no amount of development can bring it back. There are certain special situations where film must be pushed. One example is that you have the wrong film and the choice is between getting a shot or not getting one. But overall just don't do it!

Update:

14min in Acufine did the trick.
Turned out grainy and contrasty as expected, has a intereting look to it for sure.

It may be a little bit off your intention (and also a little late), but I shot also HP5+ (120 roll) @ EI 3200 and developed in R09 1+60 55mins semistand agitation (30sec initial agitation and then one inversion every 5th minute) with acceptable result. Yes, it is grainy, yes, there is a little less shadow detail, but as Gerald Koch said, either you get the shot or you don't... And I quite like the results...

It may help someone else searching for the development ideas...
