I would say you're well on your way. When I decided to get a little more serious about photogrpahy a couple of years ago I picked up a little inexpensive home film developing kit. You might have seen them, a little tank, two reels, a tray, a squeegee, thermometer, clips and tongs. I haven't been happier since. Once I got my hands wet and pulled out that first roll of film that I developed on my own I've been addicted. I get that exhilerated feeling every time and the learning never stops.
Keep at it, shoot lots of film, try to develop it yourself if you can. Oh, and try to stick to one film/dev combo until you get familiar with it. It's fun to experiment every once in a while, but working on a process with materials that you are comfortable with opens up even more possibilities. That, and you feel like a star when you get to the point where you know a particular combinations really well and can reproduce what you see in your head.
Good luck!
