Howard Bond Workshop in Ann Arbor Michigan

Hello, this will be my first time attending one of Howard Bond's workshops, on Refining Black and white images. I am pretty excited, and was wondering if anyone has attended any of his workshops in the past, and if so, what are they like?

I beleive there is one spot left at his refining black and white workshop (Ocotober 14 and 15), so if you want to go, his contact information is on www.apogeephoto.com/howard_bond.html

He also has a lot of other workshops, and when i called him he asked me if i only did film, and i said yes, he replied "then we will get along just fine!"

I attended a Howard Bond workshop back in 1989, as I recall. I am sure that Howard knows what he is doing. I found his print marketing during the workshop a bit onerous...but the knowledge given was good.

Howard is quite a character, but a very knowledable one. He always picks a 'victim' among the students who will serve as the center of his jokes, still pretty harmless. Nevertheless, he is very set in his ways (he is 70+ and has a right to be that way, I guess). Just go and be a spounge, you won't regret it. You don't have to believe it all, just try it all.

I had an e-mail from Howard recently to the effect that this might be his last year of workshops

So far, that is the only real advantage that I can see to getting older. You can think what you want and say what you think and use irascability and old age as an excuse!

Howard is a great guy and you won't find anyone who can teach you more about printing B&W. I too heard this may be his last year.

I've taken a few of Howards workshops. There is alot to be learned but still have some fun. I enjoyed them all. Have fun.

Just yesterday I got home from a workshop that was said to be multi-format and film friendly. I was the only one with film. Each day during classroom time 4-6 PM, I had the pleasure of watching the other nine down load images into their laptops. No teaching, just down loading. Then in the morning I got to see those fuzzy images on the computer screen. It sucked big time.

Howard sounds like my kind of person. Maybe next summer.

I've been to Howard's print making, masking, and zone system workshops. I highly recommend any or all. Even if you disagree with his fews on subjects like pyro or anything else, you'll find Howard to be incredibly knowledgable, willing to share, and an all around fine person -- a real class act.

For the price of his workshops, you are getting a real bargin.

BTW: the two most used references in my darkroom are my notes from Howard's workshops and "Way Beyond Monochrome".

Howard Bond

My apologies for resurrecting an old thread, but I had noticed an article in the local newspaper recently about and presentation by a Howard Bond. I wondered if it was "the" Howard Bond I remembered. After some Googling and seeing his address here in Ann Arbor, I knew it was.

I was fortunate enough to be in one of his classes/workshops back in the 70's. There were some 6-8 of us. Each week one of us had to bring a print and neg. to the session. We would first have the print critiqued by the group and then we went into his darkroom. I learned much to say the least.

The print I took was this one (St. Thomas Church Archway) in my, ahem.. portfolio.

Funny in that I can remember this like it was yesterday, but where I put my car keys is often another matter.
