How would you print 6x9 format?

Hey guys. I recently shot at a 6x9 format, unknowingly. I really hate cropping my photo's, what I took is what I want printed. So cropping these prints really isn't an option.

I don't have the ability to print with my 6x9 negatives, so I was wondering what you guys think I should do to get prints from this format? I was thinking about using a 4x5 enlarger and putting it in one of those carriers and maybe putting blocks of wood on the sides of the negatives to block light from shooting out the sides of the film.

What should I do?

make a mask out of a thin black paper or film.
or a lower mask out of a plastic sheet.

Hi,

I use a 8x10 enlarger, but i went to a "black smith" who also work with sheet metal. He modified a spare 4x5 negative carrier to take the 6x9 format and it works perfect (using anti newton glass). At the same time he converted a spare 8x10 carrier to take 6x17 negative, which i still dont have the camera for... but one day i will pull the trigger

A lot of LF enlarger have apertures to shift in. For example the Durst color heads and B&W.
I put also 35mm , 120 or sheet into the same carrier with glas and use the aperture to shade the space around the negs.

make a negative carrier from some matt board, not blocks of wood, even the slim size is too big.

Make a simple mask for your 4x5 carrier.

A piece of 5" x 4" film exposed to light, developed and fixed (to make an all black sheet) with a suitable hole cut in it would be ideal.

The proportions are almost identical to 35mm, so I just use the same easel settings as I use for 35mm. Most 4x5, 5x7 and 8x10 enlargers have 6x9 carriers available. In fact my 8x10 enlarger actually came with a specific 6x9 mixing box (Larabox 69).

BTW the 6x9 format is a fantastic fomat. Like super-duper 35mm. A million dollar Leica can't come close to what one can do with a $100 old 6x9 press camera.

Ain't that the truth? No way you can dig the kind of detail out of a 35mm negative that you can from a big old 6x9 negative. Obviously, if you're using a crap lens on the larger format, it's all out the window. But given lenses of reasonable quality, it's just not going to happen.

You can make a neg carrier out of mat board, but there are 6x9 carriers for most 4x5" enlargers.

How would you print 6x9 format?
