The following article describes how to soften a hardened emulsion using a permanganate solution. The paper also contains a lot of other very interesting information.

It is unlikely that an emulsion can be 'softened' pre-exposure and then have additional sensitization added.

It used to be quite common for emulsions to have extra sensitisation for some highly specialised uses but modern emulsions aren't respomsive to those techniques.

Prints that have been through a hardening fixer were often soaked in a weak Sodium Carbonate solution to soften the emulsion.

I would be very interested to know what kind of further sensitization Mustafa has in mind.

Hello all,

I was surfing the APUG and some posts have made me think this. I posted an another post to Alternative section and Ian replied me with interesting information. He says this is between Carbro and Dye Imbibition. I have to search for Carbro.

I think Ian Grant's post is extremelly interesting.

Ian Grant ,

Can you shed more light to your post please , is it applicable to films also ? And why modern emulsions are not responsive ? Which factory made emulsions interesting for additional sensitizing ?

My interest is to make everything factory made and sold for few dollars , more interesting. I cant coat a film like Kodak at home. For example , making factory made emulsions softened and make them have relief with pyro developer , make inkjet printers print palladium etc are my interest areas.

Tom , Ian Grant would answer your question better.

Gerald , Thank you.
