Hi everyone, I recently purchased a used Epson 4990 that didn't come with any CD-ROMs for installations. I already have Silverfast 8 that I use with a Plustek scanner, and I'm trying to find the Epson 4990 driver for use with Silverfast but can't seem to find it anywhere. I have installed Epson Scan and it seems to be working but when I open Silverfast, the scanner isn't listed in "Image Source". Could someone tell me how to set it up for Win 10? Thank you.

You will need a license for Silverfast 8 for the Epson 4990 as they're tied directly to a specific scanner. The one for your Plustek won't work. If you'd prefer scanning software that supports many different scanners under one license, take a look at VueScan. Great software at a reasonable price.

Ah I see! Yeah I will definitely look into VueScan. Thank you!

I have used Epsonscan on my Windows computers exclusively for 12 years with both Epson V600 and V850 scanners. Why not try it before buying Vuescan? You can see my results on my Flickr page linked below.

Alan is correct, each version of Silverfast controls a specific scanner. If you have one licensed copy and buy another scanner, the company may offer a discount. They did this for me a few years ago.

Yes I will definitely do that and compare with VueScan (trial version), and beautiful stuff on your Flickr page. Do you have to do a lot of color adjustments and white balance adjustments with EpsonScan for those results?

The only adjustment I do with Epsonscan is to set Levels (black and white points) before the scan to slightly past the left and right data areas. I might use ICE to eliminate dust and other spots but usually I do spotting when I edit afterwards in Lightroom. I scan at 2400bpi and 48 bit color. I save as Tiffs. I get about 90% done with Levels. Everything else is saved for editing the scan file including tweaking for contrast, color adjustments, exposure etc. I don't shoot negative color only chromes and BW. Good luck.

The best way to setup an Epson printer is with a sledge hammer.

Their printers are cranky, but my experience of the 4990 (which is a dedicated scanner, not a multi-function box) is that it’s a stable workhorse of a machine.

I don’t know about the older scanners like the 4990 but I know some of the newer scanners like the v600 that I have come with a license for silverfast even though nothing is included in the box or packaging to indicate so.

All i had to do was create an account on the silverfast website and enter my scanner’s serial number as the silverfast product serial number and register it to gain access to the download for the correct software to use silverfast with my scanner.

Like I said it might not be something that was included with these older products and it’s a one time registration so if a previous owner has already used your serial number you’re out of luck but maybe something worth giving a shot when you have a spare minute. Maybe save a hundred bucks on a license
