HELLO ALL, THIS IS MY FIRST THREAD. I AM TRYING TO DO WHAT SEEMS
TO BE THE NEAR IMPOSSIBLE, DISSASSEMBLE A QUANTARAY LENS TO SEE
IF I CAN CLEAN THE LENS OF FUNGUS; YIKES WHAT A BEAST !!!!
CAN ANYONE SPEAK FROM EXPERIENCE TO OFFER ME A STEP BY STEP.
I KNOW THE CHANCES ARE SLIM BUT I PREFER TO LEARN HOW TO DO THIS
PROCEDURE MYSELF. THANKS JIM

NEVER DO THIS TO A LENS YOU LOVE IF YOU HAVE NEVER DONE THIS BEFORE! Can't stress that enough.

I can't offer step by step, but I have taken a couple of fixed focal length lenses down and cleaned them and reassembled and they worked fine except for one thing. Watch out for the little ball bearing and the spring that creates the click as you turn the aperture ring. This is located in a little recess in the inner housing of the lens behind the aperture ring. Second thing, get a set of spanner wrenches before you start. You can get these from eBay cheap enough. These little ditties are priceless and save alot of time of lens scarring do to using the wrong tools. Be careful, use common sense, don't continue past what you are capable of and good luck.

HI CHRISTOPHER, THANKS FOR TAKING THE TIME TO PROVIDE SOME INPUT TO
THIS SUBJECT OF MYSTERIOUS PROPORTIONS. THE INNER SANCTUM OF COMPLEX
ZOOM LENSES SEEMS TO BE A PLACE ONLY FOR THE ANOINTED FEW. SIGMA,
WHICH ONCE MADE QUANTARAY FOR RITZ HAS NO RECORDS FOR PUBLIC USE.
RITZ DID THERE USUAL "I DON'T KNOW" ACT. IF I AM DETERMINED TO KNOW THIS
SUBJECT, IT ALMOST SEEMS SENSIBLE TO GET A "CLEAN" 28-80 ZOOM OF
EQUAL VALUE ON EBAY, AND GO TO WORK ON MINE, AND IF I MESS IT UP, I
WOULD JUST CALL IT THE PRICE OF KNOWLEDGE. THANKS JIM D.

PRESS '+' ON YOUR KEYBOARD TO INCREASE THE SIZE OF THE LETTERS ON THE SCREEN.

Then maybe I can try to read what you have written.

That does not work on all computers, mine--but on most browsers if you click on "view" there is a line there for increasing text size.

You're right Bobby, I often forget I'm one of the few people who use Opera. It's a browser shortcut, not a computer function.

Zoom lenses are so complex that I think a casual repair attempt is just asking for trouble -- and taking apart is much easier than reassembling! Either replace the lens, or live with the fungus (and are the results so obvious? You may be able to live with it), or send it to an experienced repairman. Essex Camera in New Jersey seems to be able to do almost anything; start with them.

NICK, YES TO ALL YOU HAVE SAID. I JUST LIKE TO BE MY OWN TECHNICIAN.
I RECENTLY USED THE CAMERA AFTER BEING STORED FOR 6 YRS. I ARRIVED HERE
TO PUERTO RICO FROM CHICAGO WHERE I ORIGINALLY BOUGHT THE LENSE, AND
USED IT VERY LITTLE. I TOOK A ROLL OF PICTURES DURING THE CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS AND DID'NT NOTICE ANYTHING UNUSUAL ABOUT THE PRINTS. IT WAS A LITTLE LATER, SHOPPING ON EBAY FOR A 75-300 ZOOM THAT I DISCOVERED THE
SUBJECT OF FUNGUS. UPON INSPECTION OF MY 50MM, 135MM, & THE 28-80MM.
SURE ENOUGH ALL HAD FUNGUS. IF I HAD'NT READ ABOUT IT, I PROBABLY WOULD'NT
EVEN KNOW ABOUT IT. SHIPPING ALL TO A TECHNICIAN, AND PAYING THE FEE,
WOULD AMOUNT TO A SUM IN EXCESS OF THE VALUE OF ALL THREE. I'LL JUST
PRETEND I'M SHOOTING THROUGH GAUZE LIKE THE HOLLYWOOD FILM GUYS.
I WOULD LIKE TO GET THIS ISSUE OF TYPE SIZE SETTLED, I'VE HAD
THE SAME REACTION ON MY TELESCOPE WEB. WHERE DID THIS IDEA OF SHOUTING
EVER COME FROM ANYWAY, IT'S SILLY, I THINK THE TELESCOPE WEBSITE HAS
A WAY OF LISTING MY THREADS IN LOWER CASE WITH CAPS. IN ALL THE RIGHT PLACES; I'M NOT POSITIVE, BUT I SEEM TO REMEMBER SEEING THAT THE LAST
TIME I VISITED THE FORUM. FORGIVE ME GUYS, I CANT SEE THOSE LITTLE MIDGIT
LETTERS AND NUMBERS. O.K. ??? JIM D.

Puerto Rico is pretty humid when it comes to storing camera gear.
I'd suggest a couple of options.
1)Store the equipment with a LOT of silica gel or
2)use a dedicated cabinet with a low wattage lamp on all the time.

Zoom lenses are sometimes a pita to reassemble and require some scribe marks on Dis-assembly for proper realignment.
Simple stuff first.
Is it a "one-touch" lens with a single zoom/focus ring or "two-touch" with two separate rings?
The one touch lenses seem (to me) easier to deal with. Most of them can be broken down pretty easily.
