How to Get Accepted for Museum Collections?

Does anyone have any experience with submitting photographs/portfolios for consideration by museums for their collections? Are there formal submission procedures? Can you ask to be considered? Do they buy or do photographers contribute?

I cannot find anything on this, so if anyone has suggestions/advice or war stories, I would appreciate it! Thanks.
