I just bought a Nikon D850 and my old Photoshop CS5 doesn't know how to open the RAW files. (It works fine with my old Nikon D90.) Is there some way to download more modern camera capabilities to an older version of Photoshop?
Thanks for any help.

Answered my own question by further surfing: Download FREE Adobe Digital Negative Converter, use it to convert NEF to DNG, and then Photoshop CS5 can open the DNG and save it as PSD or finished JPG. It adds a step, but avoids getting sucked in to monthly payments for the cloud version of Photoshop.

I don't know the D850, but my Pentax K-3 can save as DNG instead of Pentax RAW. I'm fairly sure (feel free to check) that there isn't anything I'm not getting by using DNG instead of PEF. I had to switch when I was still using CS5 and it couldn't recognize the RAW files. I now use On1, but have stayed with DNG.

I just checked: The D850 doesn't have the DNG file option like your Pentax does. But it was a good idea to mention. I'll use the file converter program from Adobe as a work-around. Thanks

If you bought the latest version of Adobe Photoshop Elements, it should convert all new cameras RAW to a full Tiff which could be edited. I believe it also allows you to use Camera Raw on the photo. Would that work?
