Hello
when it comes to color 35mm film how far past the expiration date can I expect the film to still process like new film. In this case do some films work better that others?
Thanks

in general, lower ISO/slower film keeps longer/better but the most important factor is storage conditions.
There is no rule per se on how old you should go but I'll give you my experiences.

I try to stay within roughly 5 years for color negative and 3 for transparencies if they have been stored frozen/refrigerated.

There is so much past date film on the market these days it's hard to resist.

I've found that the further beyond the expiry date you go, the biggest issue is consistency. For example a roll of film may print on a given filter pack, but the next roll will be off by 10cc or more. A big hassle if you're looking for a constant process without the need to hunt for the correct colour balance for each roll.

If you keep in a freezer, I would say up to 4-5 years. But at least try to use it before than.

Thanks. thinking of buying some older film so wanted to make sure I wasn't going to far back.

I have some 1974 Kodacolor II film. One roll was exposed back some time ago and I got pictures. Of course color was shifted and contrast was low.

The other two rolls were shot this spring and returned nothing.

From this, I have deducted that 1974 color film is too old.
