Well, lets see. A 6x6 gets 12 shots per roll of 120, and this is the equivalent of 3 frames per shot, so I recon maybe 4 exposures per roll of 120 film. Man, I love the aspect ratio of that camera!

Somebody has had all their Christmas's come at once. And it's not the buyer of the camera.

Almost AUD$7,300 for that camera is unfathomable. And he took out a bank loan to pay for it. Do the math.

There are four exposures on a 120 roll in a 6x17cm format.

That must have been ages ago, I see them on the 'bay for $1000-1500 these days. Still, makes me glad I only paid $500 for my DaYi 617 back, $300 for my Toyo G, and $200 for my Fujinon SWD. Sure beats $7000, but then it's a crudload heavier.

I doubt that you'll get a GX617 for $1500. Maybe for the body. You might get a bit of a beaten up G617 for that.

Ah yeah, missed that it was a GX and not a G.
Just checked recently sold listings, a fair few Gs have gone between $900 and $1500, with only one BIN outlier at $2300, so I wasn't far off the mark.
GXs (and one technorama) start at $2200, most are $3-3.5k depending on the lens, and mostly including centre filter (although I just paid only $175 for my centre filter, they're not ridiculously priced like they used to be).

Still, Shen Hao make a nice folding 617 for about a grand new, tilts and shifts and all.

And, with a 180mm CW Fujinon for $150-$200, and a Fujinon 90mm f5.6 CW for maybe $400, why would you consider the GX617?

I'm just beginning to learn a little about the 6X17 format. What is the difference between the Fuji G-617 and the GX-617?

G is 105mm fixed, GX have interchangeable lenses.
There are other dedicated 617 cameras like the Technorama that you can shift the back up and down, a few lenses on cones to choose from, but they're all damned expensive.
There are 'extender backs' for 4x5 cameras, you're limited to lenses between 75~150mm because of how the back works but get full movements.
There are backs for 5x7 cameras where you can use all lenses and all movements, but you're carrying the weight of a 5x7 camera.

Or there's the Shen Hao PTB617 which is a full, dedicated 6x17 folding field camera, which I'll get one day here.
(or its non-folding TFC cousin).

Primarily, interchangeable lenses.

Stupidly expensive; second only to Linhof. I've seen, for example, Fujionon 180mm lenses for the GX617 priced at 10 times the stand-alone price for the lens ($1,800 versus $180).

If you want interchangeable lenses, consider the Shen Hao 617s, or at least the Gaoersi/DaYi cameras.
