... before it can be called overdone?

Greetings APUGers. I spent a day shooting in the winter woods a few weeks ago. I shot the things you would expect: patterns of mushrooms growing on fallen trees, old dried-up leaf clusters hanging from branches, droplets clinging to branches, etc. Just as a for instance, the patterns of white mushrooms on the black tree trunks were interesting and stark, but in looking at the shots it was clear they were all variations of a single image. But each of the leaf cluster pictures seem to have a aesthetic identity of its own, probably because different types of trees were involved. It immediately occurred to me that the leaf photos might be pleasing as a grouping on the wall. My question is, how many is a grouping? I am thinking of a relatively intimate setting such as a guest bedroom or study wall, not the hallway at the Ramada Inn. These are semi abstract shots so I think it would be easy to overdo it. Any thoughts are welcome.

"It depends". 3 8x10s may crowd one wall. A 3+2 staggered arrangement may be pleasing in one space, and on another maybe a dozen 4x5s could work.

How do you want to display them, and does the display itself have potential to be artistically pleasing? One of my friends has a series of shots they produced from a trip that is arrayed on her wall in such a way that it produces a vague colour gradient if you look at it from across the room, and they become individual photos as you approach. Another is a similar setup, but makes sort of a V pattern in grey-scale. A different friend has a half dozen photos, taken in different places and trips that are set up so they look like they're all part of a larger image, like holes in a wall looking into a bigger scene, and you only notice they're completely unrelated shots after closer inspection.

What do you want the artwork as a whole to do or say?

The answer is blowing in the wind? I think it all depends on the varying the size and not keeping it uniform size. Google photo wall or go to pinterest.

hey jon !

always an odd number ..

Good advice. I didn't realize that until I did landscaping the last time I was laid off. Got a job with my friend's dad and he explained that you always plant in odd numbers. The mind grapes dig it.

Sherwin Williams method for me.

I put 'em up anywhere and everywhere barring the main rooms of the house.

As many as my wife lets me put up. My house looks like a gallery!
