An emergency diffusion filter when you forgot to bring one:
Breathe on the lens of your SLR so it fogs over. Now look back at your subject through the camera and watch the fog clear. When it has cleared enough shoot. Job done.

Tiffen black or white pro-mist, 1/2 or 1. They were the rage. I favored the Harrison and Harrison diffusion set, personally. This was always done on camera, not in post
