How do you tell the difference in SS reels

I have a good number of 35mm and 120 SS reels and am wondering how one tells the difference between the different makes, such as Hewes, Nikor,etc.? Some are easy, others not so easy. Bill Barber

I've seen "Nikor" markings and "Kindermann" markings, but I've never seen any marked "Hewes" (the ones I'm looking for). Are those marked?

I don't think they are marked... then again, it might be so small it's hard to see!! At any rate, the Hewes reels for 35mm have these "hooks" where the sprocket holes go to attach the film in the center of the reel. The other's have clips. And in 120, the Hewes clips are somewhat more elaborate than on other brands. (That' s the only way I can describe it) When I first got the Hewes 120 reels, I started to load the film in the wrong direction... it can be a little tricky to figure out which way it should go just by looking at the clip.

Also, they are simply easier to reel the film around. Hope that helps...

The Hewes reel I have says Hewes on one side. It's very faint and the light has to hit it just right.

You can tell the Hewes by the stamp on the sides, it is very faint. And by the hooks on 35mm.

I know when I'm using Hewes reels, because I only swear softly to myself while loading film. With other reels, everyone else in the house can hear my cursing.

The thing that matters the most is that the reels are stainless steel, and that they are not bent. I never cared whether they had whatever kind of clips (or not) when I did roll film - maybe learning on very basic reels with no clips was a good thing.

I used to be able to roll two 120 films back to back without losing any frames when I was short of time, and I am pretty low on the manual dexterity scale.

First off, Hewes has two different reels depending on the time period. One set has Hewes clearly marked on the clip and the other does not. Same reel. I can help you with these if you wish as I have just purchased a large batch of DR equipment which included these and I don't want them so I'm selling. They're perfect.

Most of them have the little bent wire type clip attachment device. Three or 4 are the Kinderman with the plastic center section and a clipping device that looks like it would work. There are several that have a metal insert clippy type deal with a little tab to catch the sprocket hole on one side. I have about 30 of the 35mm size, half that of the 120 and one kinderman 220 which I will probably keep as cameras seem to circulate through my house and one day another one that takes 220 will show up. I did chunk one 35mm that had obviously beeen dropped. I will significantly reduce the total number living with me. Same for the tanks. I've not done a thorough inspecting, but will get the old magnifying glass out and take a look in the next couple of weeks. They did all get cleaned up today. Bill Barber

Hewes are stamped. Also the clips will tell you. Hewes clips are just made well. They look nice. Cheap no-name reels and junkers often look.. cheap.

Kindermann 35mm reels, at least the ones I own, have sharp teeth on the clip to help puncture your thumb or film.
