How do you store your 50mm Nikkor/Zeiss RF lens?

I've got a Nikon S2 and a couple of lenses, but one thing I can't figure out is how to safely carry my 50mm lens when I switch to my 35mm. Since the 35 mounts to the outer mount, it's totally different on the back end than the 50mm.

I'd like to carry the 50mm off-camera sometimes, but not until I figure out how NOT to scratch up the rear lens element.

So what are all you other Nikon/Zeiss RF users doing?

I don't know much about Nikon rangefinders, but I find it hard to believe they didn't produce a rear lens cap for this lens.

Check out some of the Russian camera sellers on eekBay; rear caps for the Kiev Rangefinders should do the job for you.

I read somewhere that Voigtlander caps work.

It's big and heavy, but cheap: a broken Kiev. (Sorry, couldn't resist)

I have vague recollections of using a 35mm film canister: the front flange of the lens stops the back end colliding with the end of the canister. Or it may have been some other small piece of plastic tube.

Another possibility is a chamois-leather bag, and never mind the glass, which only comes into contact with soft leather. This was much favoured in the 30s and 40s, and my wife makes them for our lenses.

I bought a couple of spares from nobbysparrow on ebay. They are very well made.

If you want more than one, just send him a email and he invoices you. At only $9 I would buy spares. Worth every penny and in my opinion they are better than the original ones I had on my Sonnars.

If you remove the inner lip from a Kodak cassette 'can' - plastic- cover (craft knife and mind the fingers,) it will clip securly onto the inner mount on a Kiev lens. Dont have a Nikon to try... Cheap and difficult to remove without finger nails.

Rear lens caps for the 5.0cms are hard to find - but not impossible.

Many S2's were sold to Japan-based GIs as kits, apparently with the 5.0cm lens already mounted (or, anyway because the purchaser "tossed" it" thinking he'd never need it again!).

I suspect many of these buyers treated the camera as if it were a fixed lens one so never needed to dismount the 5.0cm and thus saw no need to keep the rear lens cap.

Search eBay and every once in a while one will pop up. You'll pay a crazy price but it's what the market will bear.

One alternative I've used is to find a plastic cap that is deep enough to accomodate the rear element. It will probably be too wide to fit snugly so then use rubber bands to hold it in place.

Not very convenient - but it will protect the element.

EDIT: I wrote this before I saw patrickjames post. I'm going to check out that supplier myself. $9 is a bargain!

A bargain no kidding! When I saw these I almost p@@ped my pants and ordered two immediately to cover my beloved Sonnars. The finish on them is very high quality. They are more durable then my original Contax caps, and the guy sends them fast, although he is in Japan.

Anyone with a Contax, Kiev or Nikon should pick several of these up. You would be crazy not to.
