The big names are always easy to find, especially if they're dead. But how do you find photographers with work you're interested in viewing? Especially contemporary photographers.

Yesterday I found a great young photographer through an image on the CalArts website. Thankfully his name was published so I was able to google it.

But is that about the extent of resources? Google searches? If would be nice if there was some kind of periodical publication, or like a database of sorts to learn who's working on what. Is there like an associated press that is sent between galleries?

ETA: For future reference, I'll combine all the replies here.

Are there galleries in Houston that show photography? If so, reach out to them and ask what they would recommend.
Do the same with any photo stores that may be around.
If there are any academic photography programs around you, do the same with them.
The reason I suggest looking ,locally is that you are more likely to find local photographers, and there is a real value to that.

Houston has FANTASTIC photo venues! (When not in lockdown). FotoFest, Houston Center for Photography (just browse in their library. You will never leave!!), MFAH, Catherine Couturier Gallery, FotoRelevance, and so many more.

Try lenscratch.com, lensculture, A Photo Editor, The Eye of Photography, Peter Fetterman Gallery, Fahey-Klein Gallery, Fraenkel Gallery, Magnum Photos, 500px, Instagram...the list goes on. Artforum Magazine, Dodho Magazine, FotoNostrum Magazine...
These are also excellent. Wait?? FotoNostrum? BRB!

Ok, to continue....Photrio's own Suzanne Revy's (gasp! A WOMAN!!) What Will You Remember https://www.whatwillyouremember.com
RFotofolio https://rfotofolio.org/author/rfotofolio/
Photographic Museum of Humanity https://phmuseum.com

One Twelve's Diffusion annual publication is extraordinary!

And contrary to some opinions about belonging to such sites, most of these can be found/followed on FB or IG (great sources when used properly). (Hey, Sean...where did the wicked devil emoji go??) I follow so may photo-related sites online and learn a great deal. There are also some right here on Photrio who post about artists they come across, which is really fantastic.

Perhaps our next outing will be gallery-hopping, Chris!

Thanks for that listing Valerie - in particular the link to Suzanne Revy's site.
One interesting thing about the difference between what Christopher asked, and what has been suggested in this thread, is that Christopher asked about "photographers" and we responded with answers about photography".
Perhaps a distinction without a difference....?

A good source of new photographers for me has been photobook flip-through channels/accounts on YouTube/Instagram. They've also been a detriment to my bank account

Here are some of the ones I've found the most interesting:

Not everything they cover is by 'new' photographers - you'll still get the Winogrands, Franks, Shores, etc. in there, but I have been exposed to many new-to-me photographers through these channels.

Of course, if Christoper does actually want to meet the photographers, once things open up again he should go to as many photo gallery openings as practical. Sometimes galleries and museums will also host artist's talks.

I'm so down for that!! I had checked out Couturier's gallery online a few weeks ago. Everything is by appointment only right now though. I've been to MFAH once but I was with K and we were only there for an hour or so.

I guess I should have distinguished that a little better. I'm probably interested more in the photography than I am in the photographers.

Other magazines to look at (apologies if they've already been mentioned): British Journal of Photography, GUP, Black and White magazine (the British one), Black and White (the American one- this is more of a portfolio magazine), GUP (a Dutch photography magazine). Also, personal networking is a good way to find other people's work. I've met a lot of folks through Facebook photography groups whose work is very interesting, and a significant portion of that I've found from seeing stuff people have shared either in groups or on their own feeds.

I posted that musing more as an observation than anything else.
Some people do tend to seek out particular photographers, and immerse themselves in their work.
Others are more likely to seek out trends in photography, or geographic tendencies in photography, or - dare I say it - photographic movements.
And there are lots of people who just jump in wherever something looks interesting.
I expect that there are correlations with whether or not you are likely to work in projects or not.
As I said - musings.

These links are really nice. Happy to discover more.

Thank you to everyone who shared those links to websites and relevant youtube channels. A thread like this should probably be "pinned" as a "sticky" thread.

use IG to shorten the above process... follow galleries and publishers.
when you find someone doing work you're interested in -- look at who they follow; also, what hashtags do they use, follow ...
at some point you will have to begin pruning your feed.

you can also visit or call a gallery. Whenever possible talk in "the big room" to people going to shows or to art oriented bookshops.

OP, thanks for the thread. please make more like this
