(How) can I attach the below lens Multigrade Filters?

Hi@all

I got a Krokus Enlarger (6x9) for free, and I'd like to use it with Ilford Multigrade Paper i.e. with Ilford Multigrade Filters
But the Problem is, that the enlarger doesn't have any insert for the Filter itself (look at pic. below)
Can you tell me how the Kit is attached normally (I mean that one: Click)
The enlarger lens is mounted on a plate measuring 8cm x 8cm....but a don't get how and if that thing works woth my enlarger.

Please help me

Don't know what the Ilford under-the-lens filters look like. The Kodak Polycontrast widgets came with a plastic contraption that could attach to the lens barrel with three rubber-tipped clamping screws, a sort of channel frame with one side open to slide the filters in. Maybe you could find one of those to try.

Are you sure there is no filter drawer between the condensers and the negative carrier.

BTW looks like a well-built enlarger; glad to see it back in service.

The Ilford kit is exactly as described by DWThomas for the Kodak kit. If you buy secondhand just make sure that the kit has the under the lens attachment and not just the box of filters.

Ilford version comes with two different mounting method.

One is to place a shim like adapter between lens and the lens mount, then attach a bracket to this thim piece.
The other is to attach the bracket to the barrel of the lens by 3 screws with rubber tips.

I didn't like either, so I fashioned a bracket out of what's called a "hurricane bracket" and attached it to an existing bolt on the enlarger.
Here's a photo of my set up. The enlarger is omega D-II. "The existing bolt" is actually a bracket to hold the red safe light filter under the lens.

I've seen folks pop the red filter out of its frame and use that to perch the VC filters under the lens.

Looking at the auction, there is a piece to the right of the filters that appears to be a ring and filter holder assembly that might be designed to mount by fastening the ring portion between the lens mount and the lens board. My Deutsch is pretty rusty, but I don't think there are any hints as to what size that is. Obviously there could be a number of reasons why that might not work for every situation -- ring diameter, distance from mount to holder, interference with recessed lens board, etc.

You might take the screw out and remove the red filter and place the filter holder in its place. I think one of my enlargers was set up that way. If you have the filter holder this should work and you can swing it out of the way when not in use.

@ic-racer: Yes I'm pretty sure about that...nothing there But yeah: the enlarger is bomb-proof

@tkamiya: I thought about some DIY and I think that it is actually the best solution for me

Is it also possible to mount the filter part directly over the plate where the lens is mounted? B.c if the Filters have almost the same size as the plate has (8cm x 8cm). Can someone measure the sides of these Filter-things please...and tell me

The holder is 7cm x 8 cm x 2cm (WxdxH)
The filter is 6.2cm square with a handle sticking out about 1cm
The filter itself is 5.2cm

If you are going to DIY, get the filter close to the lens.... I initially didn't and edge of the filter caused shadow on projected image unless the filter was placed jjjjjjust so.

On Omega 4x5 condenser enlargers (like shown by ktmiya) you can use the cheaper multigrade acetate filters and just set them on top of the condensers. You may also be able to something similar.

What you'd have to be careful is that whatever you do, it needs to be fast and convenient to take filters in and out of the path. I usually take it out when focusing and cropping. You wouldn't want to be taking the lens plate off every time you have to change filters.

Keep in mind, if you buy the Ilford kind, a red safe filter comes with the kit to fit into the same bracket. You won't need to keep your existing one in the picture.

I don’t think you have a Bellow the Lens Filter Set

From your description you have a set of MG Filters for use in a filter draw.

The Bellow the Lens set has a Filter Holder which attaches to the outside of the Enlarging Lens by means of 3 screws and hangs bellow the Lens.

The individual Filters are themselves are round and about 4cm diameter contained in a square black plastic holder aprox 5cm across complete with small finger grip

Or, when I lose the blob of Blu Tak, cruddy old bits of masking tape.

Later, I usually find the Blu TaK stuck to my shoe, so I recycle it.

Toby, hi, the auction is for a bellow lens filter set. It attaches with the lens, take out lens, screw back in with the filter holder. On some enlargers this will not work when the lensboard is turned around for an 80mm lens- such as one my Meopta 6. Fits fine with the 50mm but the lensboard has a raised face for the 80mm and there is not enough space - sooo, i use BLU TAC HEHE.

Check out the above link. It shows some professional London darkrooms. Have a look at the fifth picture from the left, which shows A Beseler enlarger of someone called "pascha". If you look closely, you'll see that there is a handmade contraption to hold regular filters below the lens. This shows that it just takes a little bit of ingenuity to come up with a solution.

I have the same situation with my Leitz Valoy, and I have no problem popping off the top and putting the filters on top of the condenser. Can you access the top of your condenser?

I have a Krokus enlarger and I attached a wire coat hanger by bending it into a circle with two vertical legs and taping them to the rails below the lens. It works great for . I would post a photo in my answer if I knew how to do it.

Thank's for the idea it also works for Gnome enlargers.

Hopefully no will notice we are short one coat hanger
