I acquired this camera in ‘as-is’ condition with the 62mm f/5.6 lens broken beyond repair. After removing the lens and making some measurements, I found a helical that was small enough to fit inside the existing trim ring of the front panel and large enough to just squeeze in a 47mm f/5.6 Super Angulon.
The camera can still be used with a 62mm panel if you have one and the panel with the 47mm can be used on any other Horseman Convertible.
With the camera shooting both 6x7 and 6x9 the 50mm finder from the Mamiya Press camera is ideal. The finder has bright lines for both formats. I removed the (massively oversized) parallax correction base so the finder sits tighter to the camera making it less cumbersome and matching the ‘industrial chic’ cosmetics of the camera perfectly.
Not being able to find the proper Horseman Ground Glass back, I read somewhere that someone modified a 2x3 ground glass from another camera, so I picked up a Graflex ground glass back with the collapsable metal viewing hood. It took a little bit to shave it down so it fits in properly. I am including it but I’m not sold the focus plane it 100% correct, I would only use it for composition.
The camera body does show some wear in the black paint, but the lens panel fits perfectly. Feels smooth like a Linhof sliding in and out, it’s quite nice. The backs are clean, the 6x7 back came from Japan via eBay and it wasn’t until after I had it I realized the film memo holder had been repainted. You can see it when the light hits it just right like in one of the pictures. Both backs work great, I was just disappointed when I saw that.
The 47mm lens is clean and clear and the Copal 00 shutter is solid down to a full second. It comes with a permanently mounted square metal sunshade w/ metal lens cap and accepts 52mm filters inside the shade.
The camera body and lens, Mamiya finder, both 6x7 and 6x9 Horseman roll film backs and the ground glass back with flip up viewing hood are $999 net plus $21.68 shipping in the US.
(PS) the leather strap in one of the pictures is NOT included... let me know if you have any questions. I also have a 4x5 point and shoot with a modern 65mm f/5.6 Super Angulon available if you are interested
