Applied Linguistics is a relatively new branch of linguistics that's interdisciplinary in nature, combining several fields like psychology, second language acquisition, pedagogy, etc. It's basically a study of how people acquire second languages and how to teach them.
Philology has more of a literary and historical background to it.
