probably wasn't used on an EVA, so no gloves were necessary.

Those guys sure beat up their gear.

makes perfect sense, actually -- they don't got time for critical focusing and are sitting in a space capsule where the options are limited, mostly the planet earth or the stars, so "near" and "way the hell out there" would cover it.

I was wondering that till I noticed it was on the Mercury missions, ie never went out of the capsule. AFAIK they only used the motorized blads out in space where noone can hear them wind on.

IIRC Apollo 12 landed near to Surveyor 3 (robot lander which landed a few years earlier to check out the proposed landing site). The Apollo 12 crew brought various parts of Surveyor 3 back to earth. On return, the television camera was reported to have bacteria on/in it - one of the theories was that somebody had sneezed on it before it flew and the bacteria had survived several years on the moon...

No, he means moon germs. Nobody knew that the moon was dead. Here's what the Apollo 11 wikipedia entry has to say about their return to earth:

Though the chance of bringing back pathogens from the lunar surface was considered remote, it was considered a possibility and NASA took great precautions at the recovery site. Divers provided the astronauts with Biological Isolation Garments (BIGs) which were worn until they reached isolation facilities on board the Hornet. Additionally astronauts were rubbed down with a sodium hypochlorite solution and the Command Module wiped with Betadine to remove any lunar dust that might be present. The raft containing decontamination materials was then intentionally sunk.

After touchdown on the Hornet, the astronauts exited the helicopter, leaving the flight surgeon and three crewmen. The helicopter was then lowered into hangar bay #2 where the astronauts walked the 30 feet (9.1 m) to the Mobile Quarantine Facility (MQF) where they would begin their 21 days of quarantine. This practice would continue for two more Apollo missions, Apollo 12 and Apollo 14, before the Moon was proven to be barren of life and the quarantine process dropped.

If you go to the Hornet Museum in Alameda, CA., they have the Airstream trailer that was the isolation unit.
