Are the turtles for pets? Food?

Is that a wall of goldfish in baggies?

Scenes like this all around must seem strange to you. Or are you getting used to it by now?

These turtles were for pets although I suppose once out of the store anything is possible. The street was all aquatic life stores, so yes, that was a wall of fish in baggies.

No, Hong Kong is not strange to me. This was my 21st trip to the territories and I know the place pretty well. I carry a map with me when hiking but rarely need it.

Let me point out that the first and last image were from the aquatic store street. The middle 3 images were from a market in Wan Chai (far away). I should have arranged these better.

One of my favorite cameras and favorite films......oh, and one of my favorite places too. Used to go there on business every 4-6 weeks back in the late 90's when I was living in Beijing for a few years. Haven't been for a long time. Miss it a lot. Very nice shots.

Thanks. I think Hong Kong is the best place in the world to walk around with a camera. I can do it day after day after day.

Hong Kong is a cool place, Ive been like 2 or 3 times, but havent now in maybe 10+ years. Great images, those little mini cakes that the lady in the second picture is making are delicious. Reminds me of this one shop in nyc's chinatown where customers would line up around the block by Columbus park to buy them from this womans tiny hole in the wall shop which was curiously located on a very slanted street, quite odd for a place downtown. Well she made a fortune on them and closed shop. Now there are little stands that sell em for $1 for 20/15 or so, but they dont taste the same. I wonder how they taste in HK.

I love shooting 120 film and the Fujifilm GA645 cameras make it almost as easy as 135 film. The only downside is the natural portrait orientation of the film. I dont like that at all. I wish I bought the GA645i version of the camera with the second shutter button for landscape oriented pictures.

Not to rain on anyone's parade but I feel like a lot of these would be better if they were in color, especially the ones showing food. To me these are a little flat, and the visual contrast that color would provide would compensate for the lighting... not a criticism but a critique.

My opinion is a bit biased, having lived in Hong Kong all my life…:

In colour, it wouldn't look very different. For example, that last photo: The sign would be red, the lights yellow (with red shades), the meat would be red, the aprons white.

My opinion is a bit biased, having lived in Hong Kong all my life…:

I'd beg to differ - as Edward Weston once put it, "You can say things in color that you can't say in black-and-white". If nothing else, the emotive value of the scene would be radically different, as would the graphical quality. Black-and-white tends to abstract things into line, form and texture (not that you can't have those things in abundance in color also). Color can take things that have very little contrast when rendered black-and-white (say a deep yellow and a bright blue) and make them pop with very strong contrast from the colors themselves. I know HK streets have LOTS of color on them, especially the shopping streets like the ones posted in this thread.

My favorite Hong Kong photo was of a rice shop in Kowloon.. Developed it and low and behold a Red and White Coca cola sign nailed to the back wall peeking over a bag... (1966)
