I landed the above two packs brand new at a close out sale. The big pack will easily hold a REALLY large camera . Of course the wife is against that idea. Oh well, it will hold all of my LF 4x5 and and 5x7 stuff on trips.

Now I need to find the foam stuff to make them into photo packs. Where can I get the stuff that is in Pelican cases or dividers like in other bags? Any direction will be good. I would like to stay away from regular foam padding if I can.

I'm not sure where you can get the foam I have 1/2" foam-core to protect the ground glass in my backpack that I just got for my 8x10 Deardorff. If anyone wants a great deal on a pack for 8x10, check this link out.

It smells a little funny (old and musty) but it is very comfortable and can fit my 8x10, 3 holders, dark cloth, and lightmeter in the main compartment, and 2 lenses in the outside pouch. Best $20 I've spent.

I own abour 4 of their packs. THey might sell you just the inserts to one of their packs if the interior eimensinos come close. They attach with velcro, so you' have to sew velcro to the interior of you current pack.

Anothe roptino would be to ask people here. I'd imagine there are a lot of unused dividers out there.

Or you can just buy the really thick stuff at a craft/fabric store (I got mine at Jo-Ann Fabrics) and cut it yourself.

An electric knife makes the job much easier.

Is it thick and stiff stuff? I have tried the regular foam mattress stuff and it was too squishy.

Oh, ooops. No - it's not the stiff stuff. It's denser than the regular mattress foam, though.

Then again, I'm not using it as separators - the 8x10 and five film holders take up the main space in my backpack (REI closeout special). It just pads the edges for me.

Darn I am having a hard time remembering the name of the street, but there is a place in Concord to buy that foam rubber and other forms of foam padding. It is on that street that heads towards Clayton, that if you are over towards the bart station is the main road going between the bart and safeway parking lots. if going towards Clayton, it is on the right hand side in one of the small strip malls about 6 to 8 blocks down. I could drive right to it, but I have brain cramps with street names.

B&h carries the pelican foam. also see Kata bags inserts.
The stuff you buy at the fabric store tends to shred if using for form fitting inserts. The particles get into everythng. You can cover it with fabric or even duct tape.
For my large duffle bag which holds my monorail I use small 6x10 dopkits to store stuff the they inturn act as padding and filler.

I finally got my 8x10 empire state into a workable state last night. So I went out and took my first 4 8x10 negatives.
I stopped at Whole Earth Provision Co. here in austin (local outdoor gear store) I found this bag made by Patagonia called the MLC (maximum legal carryon) it was a little high on price $148 (US) so I didnt buy it but I hauled in my 8x10 and a couple holders and it fits so incredibly well. with a seperate interior removeable pocket thing that the 8x10 holders fit perfectly into. small enough for a carry on which was nice but the only thing I could find negative about it, aside from the hefty price, was that there were no straps for attaching a tripod. Not a huge deal.

all in all just thought Id share the info and what I found. well built and solid simple bag. Id like to get one eventually.
