Sorry to waste valuable space here, but you guys are the only ones who will be able to appreciate this that I can tell. I just got the OK to get an 8x10 Korona! WOOHOO! I've got a limit to what I can bid on it, but I think, THINK, that I feel lucky. We'll see. I've been waiting for this for a long time...

I just loaded my 8x10 holders last night for the first time and I can tell you this, the whole experiance in the dark takes on new meaning....

Randy, don't know if congratulations or pitty is in order

I did the same thing last year, including the 8x10 Korona. I do love it, but like David said...wait until you see those great big negatives. Of course, then you will start dreaming of even bigger shhhhhhh don't tell my wife.

Randy, the 8x10 deamon has been unleashed! I love the format! Now I am building my 8x20!! It only gets bigger from here on. Sure you say 8x10 is big enough then you see the ULF and you need to feed the addiction. I must admit that having the big negs is a great thing. Enjoy!

Congratulations Randy...you'll love the big film. People always talk about the pain of carrying a big camera, but just knowing what the negatives will look like can keep me going even with my bad back.

When I started out I got a monorail (cheap way to see if the size was right for me), then I picked up a Korona to rebuild, and then I got lucky on a Calumet C1 for so little money that I couldn't pass it up. So I had three 8x10 cameras within six months...talk about insane! I'm keeping the monorail for studio work and the Korona (now fully refurbished) will become my 8x10 enlarger when I build my new darkroom later this year, so the cameras have worked out. The best part is that they were all cheap...being a bachelor I was anwering only to myself, but now that I'm getting married it's a good thing I can explain how little money I have in those cameras.

I have to admit that the call of a banquet camera sometimes gets to me, but for now I'm going to try shooting half-frame (4x10) to see if I can be satisfied with that. I'll probably have more luck once I build the enlarger.

Thanks for all the encouragement! I'll have to start looking for film holders, lenses, etc. but at least I'll have the camera that I want. I'm going to hang on to my 4x5, but I think my small cameras might have to go. All I want to take out in the field these days is the 4x5, and with an 8x10 to match it, there won't be much need for the small stuff anymore.

Randy, there is a really nice Korona 8x10 with a 12", 19", 25" convertable lens mounted on it. Two of my friends started out shooting with this exact same camera/lens combo and they are still using it to this day. The one on Ebay is a good deal and would make a great starting camera and lens for you.

Randy, buy the best film holders you can afford. Since I don't have that much spare time, I ended up with some very nice, newer holders - the first one I got was an older wooden holder that leaked bad. Thought I would get rid of the lens that came on mine, an older Regno shutter with undentified lens - turns out I am very pleased with the lens - two sets of cell, one seems to be about 61/2 the other 81/4 inch. Great coverage and find I shoot with it all the time - though the shutter could use a good CLA. Picked up one of Kerry's 240's, but still waiting until I can afford a Copal 1 for it.

For fun consider making a 4x10 splitter board or a half darkslide to get 4x10's ...and have you considered plt/pld yet

Good luck in your quest, Randy.

I'd concur with the suggestion of keeping at least one lightweight 35mm for use in site documentation, etc. My 8x10 Tachi refuses to go into the field without his little buddy along.

I was planning on keeping all of my MF gear since I've got it setup just right, but I haven't exposed 35mm film in at least a year, perhaps more. I will probably just thin out the smaller equipment to free up some funds for film holders and such. Thanks to all for the advice and encouragement!

That's the one I'm gunning for. It is just what I've been looking for for some time and although it doesn't have the rear rail, I'm a fair hand in the woodshop and I've got the 4x5 version as a model, so I think I can make something up after the fact if I feel that I need it. I just hope that I can justify going over my budget if it goes too high, becuase I really like this camera and I think I've let too many of these slip away in the past to let this one go without a fight.

I was lucky enough to get a perfect condition Kodak Master 8x10 a few months ago. Two weeks later I had the opportunity to pick up a perfect condition Kodak 2D in 8x10 for a few hundred. I didn't pass that one up either. One camera is never enough...

What is with this "one camera is never enough" stuff? Next you will be spending your money to buy 2 different lightbulbs for contact printing.
