Holiday travel for July 4th weekend

I have a three day weekend coming (much like alot of the rest)
Im searching for somewhere to travel to take photos. I live in Austin Texas.
Arkansas was actually my first instinct to try and find some interesting less travel areas to shoot at.
any suggestions? where are others going to?

just need some help brainstorming.

there is a nice mission at Goliad. If fact, there are two there. Are you gonna be in a 4 wheeler or two wheeler? Over at Bracketsville on Hwy 90 toward Del Rio is the famous Alamo set from the John Wayne movie. That might be fun. It could rain as you and I have noticed this past month. Better chance for rain in Arkansas this weekend according to the weather. Around Flatonia and Schulenberg on Hwy I 10 (toward Houston east of San Antonio) there are some nice painted churches that are generally open. Might be crowded but I doubt it. Motels on the interstate. If you go ask around as some of the churches are not easy to find. But they are all over that country. Mostly a Polish Catholic area.
That is where I need to go again. One other thing in the churches they will be dark. Take a tripod or flash or both. Or be prepared for some heavy reciprocity failure.

Goliad. I havent been there yet. I spent a couple weekends in San Antonio at the missions there but the goliad one looks really interesting. The town of Goliad seems liek it might have some interesting photo opportunities.

Couple of other thoughts, there is the Caddo Lake area of NE Texas off of I20 near Longview, Big Thicket area of SE around Woodville off of I45, then the area closer to Austin around Bastrop, Bastrop state park - know as the Lost Pines, great ferns and lots of pines in an area they aren't suppose to be.

As Lee pointed out the painted churches are a must at some point, as is Goliad. Don't forget the State Capital building, it is really a neat place inside. Please let us see what you find...

I will be sure to share. Im anxious to get out early tomorrow morning. I bought a box of the the Ultrafine 125 4x5 film from photowarehouse.biz and it came in last night. yay for offbrand fp4.

I would love to hear what people think of the shots. the scans arent spectacular. I kind of have a jerry rigged manner by which I scan in 4x5 negatives. Im looking forward to printing them.

Silos :if you leave out the grassy foreground...
Pier one: good shot
Pier two: stunning
Archway: dunno
Detail shot:very, very good.

You really need to photograph the San Antonio missions. They have lots of weathered wood doors. Espada has the stone arched main entrance doorway where they assembled the cut stone pieces wrong and ended up with a wacky opening narrower than the pair of doors.
