Holding Holders

Howdy Wise Ones...

Just yesterday I moved the Wisner 8x10 and accomanying 385 pounds of lenses from a big Lightware case without wheels to a wheeled bag. Everything fits except all the holders. I have six holders, and about three of them fit comfortably in the new kit.

So I am wondering, for those with bigger LF kits like 8x10, how do you hold the holders? Do you keep them with the camera? Separate bag? Or maybe loose on the dashboard of the car? Do you keep them in plastic in whatever the carrier, or worry less about dust?

Kind of a trivial question, I know, but not when I am out there either using my sixth and last piece of film or lugging extra bags.

I use a small napsack (backpack to all you) that is large enough to hold the 8x10 holders. A dell laptop bag will hold about 6 holders (8x10) Mostly my 4x5 sits in a box.

I keep the camera in a rolling suitcase, and the holders are in a big shopping bag (for now). A big cooler bag, like is used for sodas would be better, but I don't have one big enough (yet). The holders for the smaller cameras do fit in cooler bags and are in them now.

I carry my Gowland 8x10" monorail, up to 5 holders, up to 6 lenses, darkcloth, meter, and all the odds and ends in an ordinary padded knapsack designed for laptop computers. The camera, rail, darkcloth, and a small lens go in the main compartment. There is a thinner compartment for the holders, a smaller one that can hold meter, two smaller lenses, filters, and doodads, a yet smaller compartment for a large lens and two barrel lenses that fit onto the shutter of the large lens as well as my notebook, and a small zippered pocket up front for things I tend to need frequently, like cable releases and a level.

I also use a laptop computer bag, which is very handy for the purpose, and also holds some pens, etc.

I will take one of the spare laptop bags if you will throw an empty in your suitcase when you fly to Tucson. If not, ship one to me and I will pay you when we get there.

The laptop is a great idea. Padded, pretty secure, probably relatively dust tight.

Aggie, how do I get one? And what is it that you do that has you rolling in extra laptop bags?

Laptop bags are ideal - padded, right size and shape, plenty of pockets.

A word of warning though. Laptop bags usually contain laptops, which are a popular item with thieves. Don't leave them unattended and visible. When I buy a laptop bag I choose the cheapest, cheesiest looking one possible. After all, who would put a nice new laptop in a cheap bag?

The laptop knapsack I have (from EMS--I don't know whether they have a website, but probably--Eastern Mountain Sports) just looks like an ordinary knapsack.

I have another laptop shoulder bag that I got with a portable printer a friend gave me for my 4x5" camera. It's vinyl and totally unappealing.
