Of course I was watching this and even had a bid in the snipe engine ready but..........

I knew the deep pocket heavy hitters would be out for this, and I was right. My measley 600 bucks didn't even register on the list. Not a blip on the radar. A fart in a whirlwind. I'm flabbergasted.

Geeze Louise, someone is turning over in their grave, if I remember right, that lens, sold for all about $10 in 1910..

I glanced at that one and passed it up on account of the bent rim, not that I would have bid $1800 for it.

I worry about alignment of lenses that have been dropped like that, though my 12" Gold Dot Dagor has a dent like that that's been straightened. On the Dagor, though, the rim is actually a separate brass ring, so it could take the shock without affecting the lens barrel.

I'm sorry, but that's rediculous. Other than collector value, it's a crazy price to pay for that lens. I have a 240mm Carl Zeiss WA Dagor in a Compur shutter that covers 14x17. And it's f/9, not f/18. I paid less than 1/3 the cost of this lens. Whew...

I'm rather astonished at the final price--call it ignorance if you will on my part as I don't see desirability of it!! I do have a big old beautiful Nicola Perscheid (360cm f 4,5 ) that I told myself I would sell if I landed a Deardorff V-11--Well, I did land one but I hate to think about selling that gem--I'll just owe on the V-11 for now!! Sad thing is --I've never used the lens and it's the cleanest one I've seen---sorry Jim Galli but I doubt that Perscheid lens can produce an image anywhere near as good as you can get through a soda pop bottle--you have the ability and I'm jealous!! Actually I'm rather hooked on Petzval lenses!!

Try it and post some images! These Perscheid lenses always end up in the hands of collectors, and I've yet to see an actual photograph made with one, though I've seen some portraits by Nicola Perscheid--not necessarily made with his signature lens.

Super-wides for 12x20" are few and far between. "Unfortunately" the 11x14" B&L Protar Series V is known to cover.

I would expect a Zeiss Protar f:18 26cm to go for less than half that - go figure

I am not sure what the cost factor is. Now you just put a blank on the machine and imput the curves.
I think the expensive part is glueing cells together and mounting them into a barrel, I think this must be done by hand. It might be possible to have the cells ground/coated and then glue/mount them yourself. The machinery to do this isn't that expensive, just labor intensive. You could practice on old seperated lenses to learn how to do this.

A starting point might be looking at say the product catalogue of say LINOS and seeing if they might happen to have the components you need for their tube mount system ( I think tube mount C is the one you want). They even give the basic design software away for free. This could seriously reduce the amount of work and complexity.

A blank is the operative word here. With less curvature, they run many blanks in one go. Strong curves, like the cemented interface of an Aplanat, must be done one blank at a time.

If you look around the net there are a ton of custom optics places that can make just about anything you want. I have been temped to see how much it would cost to make one of these for you, except to modern tolerences and MC.

A 210mm Super Angulon or 200mm Grandagon should cover 11x14? I would think there still has to be quite a few of them left on the used market. I used to own a 480mm Sironar -N, I had to change it for the 480mm Ronar because the sironar's rear element was just too huge to use with a Sinar shutter, but I always thought that lens was a work of art. I wouldn't mind having a shelf of the big Grandagons and that 480mm, just for display.

Easily. See http://www.mamutphoto.com/content/view/92/43/lang,en/ for a list of some ULF lenses, they're both in there.

What isn't in there is the old-formula 210mm f:6.8 Angulon, which also covers 12x16". But they're a bit dangerous to list, since the newer ones have less coverage.

Any old lens (from the days when focal length was indicated with a number instead of the real focal length) of size No.6 or larger is good for ULF.

Well, this 270mm B&L Protar V ( 11x14 ) covers 18x22 @ f/22. It cost $73 in 1912, which is a lot.

And it is a VERY good lens. Mine lives in a Larsen's tobacco tin.

How many lenses give all the coverage an 11x14 Deardorff can handle, at any price ?

Not many. But I don't think I've ever been able to afford $1850 for it ! Wow.

As for that Nicola Perscheid, give us chance at it if you decide to set it free. It's a magic lens, but all magic needs two things:

1. You have to believe in it
2. You have to know how to use it.

It's a sweet lens, like a Pinkham and Smith, but isn't for everybody's vision or technique.

Why not just use it ?

I have the same lens, 265mm Protar V, in brass barrel, not by Zeiss or B&L but by Ross of London. Must be sitting on a gold mine here.

I suspect that custom grinding the elements would be relatively expensive, having the lens/iris barrel made would probably cost as much if not more than the glass...

Instead of a custom barrel, a standard shutter thread could be nice. Pity the Compur #2 is no longer a standard - not too big, yet big enough. And both cell threads the same...
