If interested, see link for a video about the social history of the color blue. I found it surprising.

Now that people can see blue, I have strong evidence in Google Trends that people can now see "Indigo." Soon we will all be seeing "Violet".... What is next...Ultraviolet?

Also, according to the on-line Etymyology dictionoary, the word Cyan is traced back to 1889. So by the reasoning in the video, prior that time, like 1850s, people viewed Cyanotypes as grey.

Sacre Bleu!

that is made from lapis lazuli ( found in Afghanistan ) and its called sacred blue because it is used primarily in paintings of Mary. years ago I heard a report on NPR about it ( must have been 25 years ago ? ) and it talked about how it was one of the most precious commodities a painter could have and typically in the Middle Ages someone going to Afghanistan would have to haul out 4x as much as he needs because 3/4 was used to bribe bandits/highwaymen/robbers who would demand $ or product to let one pass...
