Does anybody have a recommendation for such a book? I just got "A World History of Photography", and was wondering if there is a similar tome for graphic arts. I'm looking for a history of compositional techniques/etc through the ages, i.e. something that would apply to phtography.
Gardner's "Art Through The Ages" is a possible resource. It comes in two volumes and is used in some university art history courses. It covers a lot of territory, but provides a good understanding of art history.
I've got Art through the Ages - it's pretty good. If your looking for something very brief there's "...isms: understanding art" by Stephen Little (ISBN: 0789312093) which covers in two pages (of a small book) each artistic movement. While it doesn't really go near photography, it is an interesting yet brief overview of artistic movements.
