Hippie strap for TLR

I never got time to be a hippie, I was in the military in the early sixties and after I left I was too busy working to support my young family.
 
Hippies went out of fashion when advertisers realized they couldnt sell clothes to people that made their own or just went around naked.

Seriously, I'm too young to have been in the hippie culture, but I'd probably fit right in.
 
..and I have a cool rainbow strap for my Olympus OM2. But yes, I hate the ugly metal clips and swivels on the end. I wish it was just cording on the end.

I have wondered the same thing.

I'm currently using a Canon EOS strap on my Yashicamat (blasphemy!), so I'm also on the look for a "new" strap, but I haven't been able to decide what I want the strap to look like. I like the look of hippy straps though. I've also wondered what a chess board pattern would look on a strap.
 
Comments about "hippie straps" aside, why on earth would you even want one of those things? Cute? Maybe, that's a matter of opinion. Retro? Don't you think that TLR is retro enough? I've got a couple of Mamiya TLRs and I've equipped both with those newfangled neoprene straps. Makes carrying those tanks around a lot easier on the neck and shoulders. Maybe I'm too pragmatic for my own good.
 
I agree Frank, I have two of these beasts a C330F and a C33 the latter is almost twice as heavy as the former, and is like carrying a brick round your neck, so I use Op/tech neoprene straps too.

I don't know about retro, but I just like the look of them. I first got the idea from the movie "Blow-Up". In the band scene I noticed the "hippie" guitar strap and thought it would be nice to have a strap like that for a camera. Back then I didn't even know it's possible to get camera straps like that (I was prepared to buy a guitar strap and modify it).

EDIT: Ah, by the way, "back then" was about 2 years ago.
 
I used to have a 'checkered' wide strap, it lived on my Olympus FTL.
 
I prefer to carry my hippies in a hippie bag, rather than with a hippie strap...

I cant believe this subject got this much run time-- many of us must be bored--time to get a life(especially me)NOT!
 
If it pleases the eye, why not? Each to their own. I need a strap for my Automat as I don't always like to carry it in it's case ( which has a strap ). My Automat is pretty light so an Optech would be overkill. I did see some snazzy woven leather straps on eBay a few months back, might go for one of those.
 

Gracious!! Someone after my own heart. This is the only kind of strap I'll use regularly.

Now, to get rid of the metal hooks get your handy dandy drill, and drill out the lower brad and put in a snap instead.

If you're going to be a real hippy, then you have to learn a little about leather work.

Do I want clip style A or B on an Op/Tech Super Pro strap for use with my Mamiya M645 1000s? I can't tell any difference from the pictures, I think one is supposed to be only for using with an auto-winder attached, but don't know if it's A or B.

I think it would be pretty nifty with a torso strap stabilizer and the WLF with a cable release...
 
Michaelbsc -- yes, a true hippy aficianado would know about leather work -- and macrame!

I can see it now: a macrame hemp strap, with seashells and peace symbols woven in as appropriate.

Hey, I'm not makin' fun -- I graduated from high school in 1969 just south of San Francisco, so I was there, man! Long live KSAN....

Aint that the truth, a similar contraption on a Zenit Photopsniper and a 300mm lens nearly got my head shot off in Belfast several years ago.

Wow, I havent seen one of those in years. We all made a poormans version to shoot those 400mm Spiratone lenses offhand(tripod--whats a tripod?)we were all wildlife photogs, dontcha know!
 
I have one that I use on my FM. Came with it and it is by far the most comfortable strap I have! I was told it was bought in Mexico, but by the design on it, i think it was made in the US. I would say your best bet is to just buy a guitar strap and modify it.

Who needs lives when we have our darkrooms?

them for my SL66 and I am very happy
with it. I usually don't engage in camera
porn but I am attaching a photo of the
camera (with a Petzval mounted) and
Souldier strap. They use recycled auto
seat belts for the webbing, and stitch
the fabrics onto it -- very nicely done.
