Going to Israel and wondering if HIE is any more or less likely to be damaged by walk-on security xray than Tri-X 400
Thanks

The trick will be getting your film out of Israel. You can still get a hand inspection in the USA so, if you have a direct flight, you can easily get your film to Israel (from the USA) without any x-rays at all. The fact that you're travelling with HIE of course, complicates matters because it is not even supposed to be removed from the box in daylight. Again, with patience and a changing bag, I think you could still get the film through an airport in the US without damage.

The security inspection at Tel-Aviv however, is seriously ridiculous. It goes on and on for ever. There will be no way at all of getting them to hand inspect your film. Your carry on items will go through the machine at least twice and possibly more...and then they will open all of your carry on items - EVERYTHING and do a very, very thorough "wipe down" inspection. Further, I doubt very strongly that they would be very willing to cut you any slack for special film. On my last trip to Israel, I lost a few rolls of 400TMY - but, I stopped in Madrid on the way home. Two times through the machine in Tel-Aviv airport once at the Royal Palace in Madrid , once at a Museum and again at the airport in Madrid makes for a total of five passes through the x-ray machine. Five times is definitely enough to see an effect on TMY.

I've taken HIE through the carry on x-ray at St. Louis, Boston, London Heathrow and Manchester (UK) all on one trip and it didn't hurt it. However, no one opened the canister.

At last another reality check on Israeli security--thanks! I've been thinking that because of the situation I would see to getting all my film--HIE and Tri-X--developed within Israel. Would you think that's a reasonable plan? Any thoughts on finding a good processor (preferably in Jerusalem, though Tel-Aviv is doable).
Thanks,
Chaim

I process HIE myself anywhere abroad while there, it's not a problem.
It's got the added bonus that if you have failed to get the results you require your still there and can try and improve the shots.

Best of luck JON.

I found a place in Haifa with a fancy new Agfa machine that produced excellent results. It was called Held studios or, something like that. Employees spoke very little English however and I speak exactly three words of Hebrew - still they got the job done. That was plain vanilla color print film though.

Tel-Aviv is a big, modern city. There must be some place there that will do B&W for you. Don't forget to ask the wedding photographers where they get their stuff done. You might even find something on the web.

I don't know anything about Jerusalem as travelled mainly in the northern third of the country.

If I remember correctly, there is also a Fed-Ex counter right in the Tel-Aviv airport.

Tempting to suggest packing a changing bag and processing tank, and buying chemicals locally to do your own processing. Most likely you'll be able to get HC-110, D-76, etc. as well as Rodinal and possibly some Ilford chemistry in both Jerusalem and Tel Aviv; any brand of rapid fixer is pretty much like the next. Take along some film clips and a sheaf of negative sleeves -- even Tel Aviv's airport check-bag X-rays won't hurt processed negatives. And just discard or give away the unused chemicals before you return.
