I was given about 20 sheets 4x5 Kodak HIE IR.

I just got a filter of ambiguous pedrigree that is closest by description to an 87 ('cutoff wavelength = 760 nm', not specified whether 0 or 50%). I don't think it matters much with this film, given it's broad IR response.

I would like to know if anyone has tried Caffenol or Caffenol C with HIE.

I have read of pyro-type developers taming both the tendency toward graininess and halation by 'surface' development.

It occurred to me that Caffenol being a staining type developer and Vitamin C, as I understand it contributing some factor to surface development, either of the Caffenol recipes might offer some creative options with this film.

Some people like the grain and halation, but it would be nice not to be stuck with it for everything.

Thanks

Be very careful loading this film into your film holders, it scratches very easily.

As for the developer I would test it on another film since you have only 20 sheets. Instead of the 87c use a #25 red or #29 red and expose at 1/60 @ f/11/ I would sacrafice 1 or two sheets cut into halves or thirds and taped inside the film holder to work out development if you are not familiar with this film. XTOL, HC-110 dil. B, D-76 1:1 would be good choices or use PMK 1:1:100 @ 75F for 12 minutes.

Good luck,

Or placed in the back of a 6x6 or 6x9 folder.

In my limited experience of caffenol (without vitamin c added in), it's somewhat of a film slowing developer and I wouldn't think it'd be so good for IR stuff where you're probably more likely to underexpose as you're blocking out so much of the light with the filter. The filter would lose a lot of stops and caffenol won't be able to help bring those back.
