I'm Alex, I started off with a digital compact last december and then I wanted to move up to an SLR, I knew I coulden't afford a 300D or D70 anytime soon, but I did find Film SLRs going for cheap on Ebay. I got an OM-10 in march and from there I fell in love with film. I am now hopeing to study photography part time just so I can get into a darkroom. I am currently Have an om-30 as well as my OM-10 but What a really want to get is a modern SLR.

Welcome!

Learn the basics with your OM-10, and you might find that the latest SLRs don't offer much that you really need. Even on my old Canon F-1N, I don't use any of the automatic features that were the hot thing back in 1983. All the mechanics really just do three things--focus, set the aperture, and set the shutter speed (and if you have TTL flash, some cameras will automatically compute the flash exposure for fill). It's not too hard to do those three things, and if you do them manually, you have more creative control.

Welcome Alex and I agree with other comments. Keep the camera you have and learn it well. I use a 20 year old Nikon FE2. It is a great camera and does everything I need. Don't forget that it is the photographer that makes the picture not the camera. Good luck !!!

I wasn't planing on Replacing it with the F80, I intend to keep the OM-10 (sell the 30) I have a good reason to want a modern SLR. I cycle everywhere I need to keep weight down, I like to try double exposures, The zoom lenses for the OM system arn't that good (mine is a bit S**T, don't use it) and I like to get quick candid shots often using wide apetures, I need a camera that can focus quickely.

I must admit I do still use my F610 BTW Digital compacts do make good light meters.

Welcome to the fold!

For quick focussing, wide angle and wide aperture shots you might want to consider a rangefinder. Have a search here on "rangefinder" for some tips on nice small Olympus and Canon(ette) and other models.

Welcome Alex. I doubt that you will find a lighter 35mm SLR than the OM10 that you have. I started with one, before upgrading to an OM2. Good luck.

Oh I know the modern ones Are lighter, I have handled them.

I think that my OM-10 is plastic, or maybe Plastique
