I'm Martti, and I live in Finland. I have been photographing for 7-8 years now, mostly with film cameras.

In the last few years the hobby has started to deepen and now I have started my first photoprojects with explicit themes. First of them is photographing old log houses. I wrote my master's thesis on sensory experiences and log houses, and now I'm writing a web based exhibition on that theme with photographs. Generally I'm very much interested in connections between people and places.

After many years of 35mm cameras I bought a Mamiya RB67 a few years ago. I like that camera very much, but it was just first step to bigger formats. I like all kinds of old stuff, and medium format started to feel like - well, too medium, and last winter I bought a Zeiss Ikon Ideal (9x12cm). Now I have been thinking about getting a 24x30cm camera... I think that larger format cameras and different thinking process involved in working with them have been important in deepening of my photographing.

Of course using a 90-year old large format camera hasn't been all without troubles. I have had problems with focus, scrathing of films because of my erroneous way of handling the film and holders, dust, developing, lack of right kind of film holders etc. But one by one these problems have been fading away. Let's see what even bigger format brings...

Welcome to apug. You seem to be taking your photography very seriously.
If you are to move up in size I would recommend 8"x10" instead of 24x30cm since it is so much easier to find gear and film and it is not that much smaller (You can find enlargers that take 8"x10" but it is hard to find one that permits 24x30cm).

I must correct myself, I have been thinking of getting 18x24cm camera, not 24x30cm.

8"x10" is also one option, but I've been looking for cheap camera, and that means I'm probably getting a FKD 18x24cm. I know it's not the best option, but money is very tight now as I've had less work than I would prefer... It's the curse of being a young museum professional these days. But you never know what might happen.

Welcome! I've spent quite a bit of time around Helsinki and Finland is a beautiful place, especially if you're a fan of environmental architecture (cabins and whatnot).

Your thesis sounds quite a lot like my architecture thesis - looking at hiking, and the influence of remote architecture on experience. I'll be very interested to see your web exhibition!

Lately I've been thinking that old cottages are in relation to children's treehouses and things like that. Closeness to environment is experienced strongly because of the sensory properties of old wooden house. For example sounds and moist smell of rain are felt in the house as well as outside. In old traditional Finnish houses there is moss-sealing on the wall, fireplaces in every room, walls keep noise in fall and spring because of fast changing temperature etc. All of this affect the way world - and being in the world - is experienced. Modern apartment is very different a home than old cottage, and there are of course different things which affect our experience of world.

The web version which I'm currently writing consists of texts about senses, history and that kinds of things about old cottages and photographs which I use to shed light on those thoughts. Most of the photos are shot with Mamiya RB67 in black and white and then coloured with computer. We'll see if I translate it to English when I'm ready. My english is a bit rusty now, but I think I can get a hang of it soon enough.

Welcome to APUG Marttiko! I'm currently in Turku now, and passed through Tampere earlier today (unfortunately I did not have time to stop and explore). I really like your thesis concerning the relationship of the senses to the environment, especially with old log houses. Coming from the countryside in a more northern part of Canada, I feel very at home and comfortable here in Finland as the environment is very similar, but I have to admit I was not prepared for the sensory overload I had over the weekend when I was in Helsinki. I went to the open-air museum of Seurasaari, and towards the end of my visit I just sat down on a bench and enjoyed the beautiful forest and old buildings around me. I was very surprised to find myself crying after a while, and I think it was just the sensory overload of it all - I have spent the last 2 and a half years in a city with little connection to nature and it made me realise how much I miss it and need it. If you ever get around to translating your work, I would very much like to read it.
