Hello!

I have just joined up and thought id say hello.

I have been really excited about starting learning darkroom techniques. I am also new to photography (3-4 months). It seems everywhere I look / read, people are saying just get a digital SLR and convert to black and white using photoshop..

Am I really disillusioned into wanting to shoot slides and hand print all of my b+w?

All this negative (no pun intended) talk I hear from shops, news, kodak paper, nikon ending 35mm etc is really spoiling my enjoyment and enthusiasm!!

Can anyone reassure me!

Hi from St. Louis, MO USA!

No, you're not disillusioned about wanting to shoot slides and hand print your b/w! I shoot 8x10 (inch) color transparencies (on occasion) and 8x10 b/w. I make contact prints of the latter and the former, well, I've had some internegs made and prints made from them.

Looking forward to seeing some of your work here.

Welcome from Hawaii!! Don't worry, transparencies and B&W are alive and doing quite well. You are fortunate, there is an excellent group of photographers from the UK that are members of this forum, and they seem to have an active group. Welcome.

Check out the local UK Regional Group part of the forum ((there was a url link here which no longer exists)) to see what's happening locally - in particular, t' Sping 2006 weekend meet-up int' Dales...

Hello and welcome from another middle Englander. I started at Leamington College's C&G basic B&W photography. They ran 2 parallel courses per term, every term, for about 20 people per course. If the tutor had been willing I suspect they could have run a course each night of the week. Most students weren't the wrong side of 40 either. So there was no shortage of enthusiasm for analogue skills. There's still reasons for hope.
