took it into the repair shop and he is having trouble focusing also. Camera is 2 yrs old. Focus is just a little off. Anyone run into this? Ideas?

I am confused, I thought the focusing was on the lens not on the camera. Do you have another lens to compare? or maybe the repair person does?
I have seen this problem in 35 mm cameras but invariably it was the lens not the camera itself.

Hey Mystique, Good to see you over here at APUG. Not sure what is going on with your camera, but I send my Mamiya gear directly to Mamiya for repairs. They do a great job, always have the parts, and are quick. Well worth the extra expense (their prices are higher than my local bay area shops). YMMV

The lens is a 55-110, that I had sent to Mamiya for a total over haul. Got it back, but I noticed that the focus is soft. K losing my mind here....Took the camera and lens into our local repair, and they use a thing that measures focus point (I don't know the name of it
)....and they also said it's off. Do, I thought that my focusing screen might have gotten harred a little, but they say no. So... send lens back? I am anal about sharpness, esp around the eyes. I have had nothing but trouble with this lens. ??

I was just zippin' along shootin' up a storm one day ... after trying to hunt down the cause of my focus problems for a month or so ... when the film mag came off in my hand!
... dark slide out, film loaded and in the middle of a roll!
Come to find out the was an alignment problem with the body and film mags that was the cause of my focus problems. Fortunately there was a Koean gentleman who was the regional MAC authorized repair person and he fixed both bodies and all three mags for less than $100!
... he also installed a sync speed lock, a nice touch since the original Supers only locked the shutter dial into 'Auto' mode in their 'stock' configuration.

Hi Billy! I think this issue is with the lens, b/c it is only with this one particular one. THe 80 is sharp always. Just the 55-110 is every now and then soft. No rhyme or reason to it. ARGGGHH!!!

I've owned three 645 80mm Mamiya lenses, two AF and one for the Super, and they all sucked!
I'm hoping they'll do a 1.9 80mm AF so I can have an excuse to ditch at least one of these critterz.

nope...been to busy to ship it in the the repair shop. But, I am having a very interesting light leak issue now. Also, it is forwarding 1/2 frames... ARGH!!!!!! I GOTTA send it out! EEK! The 80 is too sharp tho, honest...ALWAYS! Just the zoom is undependable...
Holy smokes, what else can go wrong with that camera? I have never had any issues like this with either of my Mamiya's. They are usually solid machines.

Hi! Thanks Aggie! I have the AF .. new, and the af 80, and 55-110. I sent it all in...we will see what they say. the zoom iss soft and the back is doing 1/2 frames. It is silly, I shot a Bronice Etrsi for 10 years, no problems...EVER! And this Mamiya is trouble!!!! lol.....
Well, the circut board??? is bad, and the AF sensor is off. 200.oo! Argh!!!!!! THey say the lens is fine...well of course it is, it's under warranty...sigh...Oh well. Really nice people there!

To bad about your experiences with Mamiya. The 645 system it seems has always been a pimple for them. I would have thought they would have been a little more lienant on the charges, but then again I don't know all the cirumstances.
It's kind of weird, the 330TLR and the 7 have a reputation of having sharp lenses, but the 645 has alway been thought to have soft lenses. I wonder if they are farming out their lens production and the 645 lenses are being made at some inferior operation.
I started out with a Minolta SRT 101 (actually really started out with a borrowed Rollie TLR) and I loved the camera, but the lenses were never sharp enough for my needs. Switched to Nikon and never looked back. For 35mm that is. Do mainly MF and LF now.
My ramblings don't seem to address your issues but what I am leading up to is maybe you should ditch the Mamiya and go to the Pentax or Contax 645's if you like that format. I understand the optics for both of these systems are very good. I have seen large enlargements made from the Pentax and they were very sharp. If the Contax uses Zeiss glass then your ok with that one. The lenses on my Blad are great.
I used a Bronica S2A for years (with Nikkor lenses) and one of the backs I had was a 645. I finally found that I ditched in favor of the sq 6x6 back. Just didn't have to mess around when I wanted verticals, especially when using a flash.

As to considering changing over to a Pentax 645: I recently bought one with standard lens and I can only agree that the lens is a marvel of sharpness. Moreover the "bokeh" , the transition from sharp to unsharp is also great. Unlike many of its competitors the Pentax offers a lot or rather is all singing and dancing: comes with autofocus, programmes, built-in winder etc. at a price the others can only offer basic cameras (with viewfinders etc all at extrta cost)
When I purchased it, I was torn btwn the Contax, and the Mamiya. I like the "warmer" glass of the Mamiya. The Bronica I feel is a little cooler. Grerman optics and all. That is also why I did not go hassy. I have been satisfied with the Mamiya, but I am getting a bit disgruntled now. Grumble Grumble.

There are a LOT of good MF cameras out there. The difference between the various brands is pretty minimal. Anyone would be hard pressed to figure out if a shot was taken with a Hassy or a Bronica. What REALLY counts is comfort. How do YOU feel about using the camera. A camera you don't feel good about will do you no good. You won't like using it and it will show in your pictures more than a minor difference in the quality of the lens. Heck, I sometimes shoot with whatever matches my mood at the time. I might use my old C3 one day, my ETRsi the next, and my old FT2 the day after that. Maybe the next week I will only shoout with my F80 or my Speed Graphic. Depends on how I feel.
