Yes, this is a very sad passing!

I'm very glad his health was such that he could continue work into his 80s.

I started reading his columns when I was in my teens, back in the late 1960s. I've followed him ever since and considered him to be a mentor.

This is a great loss to the photo community!

His informative magazine articles were in contrast to much repeated (redundant) information through the months and years - one of the reasons I kept my subscription to Popular Photography going during the 70's and 80's. He was a sort of myth buster.

That leaves only two people I believe when writing about photography: David Vestal and Bill Jay. Just as I bought Pop and Modern because they contained Keppler's column, I buy Lenswork solely to read Bill Jay.

I just found out a few minutes ago, and except for family members I am a rather cold and hard sob, but this truly saddens me.
The Old Guard is passing and their types are not being replaced; my dad said there is nothing golden about getting old and now I understand what he meant.

I have been reading his columns since the seventies, first in Modern Photography, later in Popular Photography. I was glad he made it as a staffmember to the new magazine as this enabled me to continue reading him. I haven't cancelled my subscription on Popular yet, but I am not far from doing so now.
It would be nice to have his contributions bundled in a book. Would give a nice and realistic overview of the development of photography over the last half century.
No replacement available i fear.
