I always liked his practical, real-world approach to things and the characteristic New York voice in his writing.

On top of everything else that will be mentioned in the various obits and appreciations, I'll always remember him as by far the most prolific user of the word "tyro".

His column was the reason I held onto my subscription for Popular Photography so long after they became a primarily digital magazine. He will be missed.

Yes, this is a very sad passing!

I'm very glad his health was such that he could continue work into his 80s.

I started reading his columns when I was in my teens, back in the late 1960s. I've followed him ever since and considered him to be a mentor.

This is a great loss to the photo community!

He was pretty much the last voice of traditional photography in the photo print media. His was also the only writings I continued to read in Popular Photography until my subscription finally expired.

His informative magazine articles were in contrast to much repeated (redundant) information through the months and years - one of the reasons I kept my subscription to Popular Photography going during the 70's and 80's. He was a sort of myth buster.

He will be missed. When I was first getting interested in photography (back in the days of Modern Photography), his column was the first thing I read in the magazine - his writing always seemed warm and inviting.

That leaves only two people I believe when writing about photography: David Vestal and Bill Jay. Just as I bought Pop and Modern because they contained Keppler's column, I buy Lenswork solely to read Bill Jay.

I just found out a few minutes ago, and except for family members I am a rather cold and hard sob, but this truly saddens me.
The Old Guard is passing and their types are not being replaced; my dad said there is nothing golden about getting old and now I understand what he meant.

I have been reading his columns since the seventies, first in Modern Photography, later in Popular Photography. I was glad he made it as a staffmember to the new magazine as this enabled me to continue reading him. I haven't cancelled my subscription on Popular yet, but I am not far from doing so now.
It would be nice to have his contributions bundled in a book. Would give a nice and realistic overview of the development of photography over the last half century.
No replacement available i fear.
