I am posting this to help out a friend who intends to become a writer on photographic subjects and who has a particular interest in 20th century film and photo history. She is a highly capable writer and very dedicated to her craft and especially research, and she may well become a 'photo historian'. We need more of these, and I want to do what I can to encourage her in her quest to develop in this area.
She often spends time browsing in my extensive photo library, which is mostly kept in storage cartons which he has been unpacking for me. We are finding many small treasures and examining them, with of course many pleasant (and a few not so) past memories of my own photographic life from the 1960s, returning to my mind. Lots of deja vu for me...
Anyway, she is now interested in finding more information about Henry Russell, who as someone in a recent APUG post wrote, was involved with 'Minicam' (or 'Miniature Camera') magazine, which I thought were both the same, in the 1930s. Mr Russell was also a prolific writer of photo books, several of which I have on my shelves. I recall he wrote a general photo guide book (I did have a copy but it is now missing) in the late 1950s or early 1960s, by which time he would have been quite elderly. His early books gave me interesting glimpses of what early 35mm photography must have been like, and also they seem to have been illustrated with his personal photos, including family ones, which makes them all the more interesting to both me and my writer friend. He was very fond of early Contax cameras, which he often mentioned in the books, and also Kodak D76 and Ilford ID11 developers.
A photographer friend recently told me Mr Russell was born in the mid to late 1890s and apparently died in the 1960s, but unfortunately he could not recall where he had read this.
My writer friend's internet searches have unearthed virtually nothing by way of biographical information about Mr Russell. I am all but useless at OL searching and she is a novice at it (this will be a good learning curve for both of us), so we have done only very basic searches and there may be OL data out there we did not find.
The recent APUG post writer mentioned Mr Russell was a photo columnist with the pseudo byline of "Minicam" which may be where my earlier confusion (see above) arose. He also seems to have written many articles under his own name. The Ilford history web section (this from my friend) apparently has or had a very brief n note about how his company did all the advertising for Ilford and also Johnson's, and also acted as distributors of s well as photographic equipment distributors.
If anyone could point us to sources of information about Mr Russell and 'Minicam',this information would be greatly appreciated by my friend, who has told me she would be very happy to acknowledge all help in this intended project in her writing.
Thank you in advance from us both.
