I ended up with this nasty streak on my negative. Its actually on the backside. It appears to be dried gelatin or something?? Also, there is quite a bit of dust and water spots.
I dry my negs just by hanging in the bathroom. I think I need to invest in a dryer of some sort. Does anyone have suggestions?
I recently spoke with someone who was using tubes for daylight developing and had similar streaks. He was loading the film in the tubes and letting them sit for awhile before developing. The tubes were not completely dry inside and water droplets were running down the film and pre-soaking it in spots before the developer hit it. Those areas showed up as overdeveloped streaks since the developer was absorbed more quickly.
Use some wetting agent in the dev and also in the final wash before hanging to dry.
Always make sure the reels etc. are dry before using (try a hair drier if needed soon after use).
The neg may improve with another attempt at washing.
Agreed that the streak looks like a development issue. In addition to the above, it can happen while pouring the developer into the tank if it's too slow.
As for drying, one inexpensive solution is one of those closet bags that are supported on a hanging wire frame for long-term close storage.
I was also having a dust issue, doing the same as you, drying in the bathroom. I got myself one of these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000JTFTFI/ and it's been quite an improvement. It's a hanging garment bag. It's a too short for a 36 exp roll of 35mm, so I let it bend, or you could cut the roll in half.
