Recently purchased an old Rolleiflex MX-EVS. The taking lens is a Zeiss Tessar 75mm F3.5.

The taking lens has a bunch of oxidation and haze inside that I'd like to clean out. I removed the lens from the body. But now I can't seem to figure out how to get inside the lens barrel.

There seems to be a small spanner collar in the back, but after removing that, the element was still stuck inside.

The front element doesnt seem to unscrew? unless I'm just not turning hard enough.

Any help is appreciated. I'm a handy guy with these old things I'm just stuck!

Couple of visual aids if needed

Look up that ebay item and you will find the front element of the Rollei tessar for not much money. Clearly it is coated and I assume it is new. Might be worth a try to see if it works.

I cleaned up a Rolliecord with the similar problem. Not exactly sure on your lens, but most others the ring with the lettering unscrews. This allows access to the inner lens surfaces. A piece of plastic pipe the same diameter as the ring and a rubber "lid opener" can do the trick, sometimes better than a spanner wrench.

Thanks for the info. I figured it out. I totally missed a VERY TINY set screw in the front element collar. After I got that out it unscrewed and I had access to the inner lenses. Unfortunately the haze is due to scratches on the front element. Hopefully I'll be able to replace this from ebay somewhat cheap.

Thanks a bunch.

I'd like to do this with my Automat, it has a tiny scratch in the taking lens which is reasonably deep. It hasn't affected image quality so far but it really bugs me. That said, I haven't shot directly into the sun with it. Would you say this type of repair is hard for someone that is only moderately handy?

You mean you want to put a new front element on the camera?

I'd only do that if intending to sell it to a collector for $$$. There is always a chance you can mess up the exact adjustment of the focusing and taking lenses when replacing the front element.

So get a pro to do it then. I don't have any intention of selling it unless I was going to trade out for a newer model, a local store has a 2.8D I keep looking at

I'm not familiar with how to contact others on this forum but I think I have one of these same cameras in a box of cameras and it doesn't work, everything is hard to move, but if I remember correctly the lenses are perfect. Let me know where you are and how to send you some pictures of it, and the price you might pay. Thanks, Bob in Michigan. nanthor@hotmail.com
