Help with Paterson timer

I have got hold of a secondhand Paterson PDT1020 timer with exposure meter. The only instructions it came with were how to calibrate it for different paper speeds. Nothing about actually using the metering function. What part of the image should I put the sensor on? Shadows, midtones or highlights?
