About 20 years ago I walked into an art supply store and bought this roll of 'tape'. I use quotes because it really is not tape, being far too thin, but provides an anti-acid, double-stick surface 'film' with which to attach photos to boards without ANY physical density to mar such efforts.

Please tell me what the formal name this is (not necessarily trade name) and how to acquire more if I run out of this. Things like this are difficult to find. Sure, Scotch makes a double-stick tape, but it is as thick as regular tape. This stuff is amazingly thin. - David Lyga

If you are near a Blick's, check out "ATG" tape (think that's for 'Adhesive Transfer ...'). Both 3M and Lineco make versions of it; some are archival, some maybe not. It's a slippery paper tape that you press down on one surface, then peel the paper away leaving just the adhesive.

They sell a fancy ($$$) pistol grip dispenser for it, but the patient craftsman can ignore that!

I was there YESTERDAY in Philadelphia. They know NOTHING about this tape. But I did not know the 'magic words' you just said, DW. Thank you for telling me about ATG tape.

This is the terminology I was looking for. - David Lyga

DWThomas is correct. It is called Adhesive Transfer Tape. 3M's tape #s are 924, 927, 467, or 468 depending on application. I believe the 468 is the most used for automotive foam adhesion, and graphics. Not sure which type you would need, but you can look them all up on 3M's website.

Again, thank you both. The Internet, combined with real people, is a godsend. - David Lyga

Neschen (DE) has various sizes of mounting films. I use the GUDY double sided tape on rolls, available in various widths. The carrier foil (with adhesive on both sides) is 44 micro-meter.

These thin tapes all seem to consist of a nonwoven fibre base (paper-like), soaked with adhesive.

And to make you life easier look for the ATG "Gun" that dispenses the tape and re-rolls the liner into the gun. No muss and a heck of a lot less mess once you figure out how to reload the dang thing. I bought mine for half price with a Michael's coupon. There are acid free archival tapes in most widths. There's also 3M PMA mount tissue for cold mounting prints or almost anything else. Sort of like prepositional "ATG" in sheets.
