help with blue box seagull

hello friends my local shop have a various stock of oriental paper...the old oriental paper in blue box graded paper...i have made some test with this paper and seems not to be expired.......

the paper seems to have a neutral tone in neutol wa ....or slightly yellow...

how do you think about this old brand???

Danzyc:

I have some experience with this paper mostly developed in Ilford Multigrade developer. I have found that it gives really rich blacks and had a very nice luster (for the glossy finish paper). The one downside of this paper is that when completely selenium toned a slight, but noticeable, purple color is developed.

I still have some in the freezer. It's great with Ansco 103 (not a typo--103, not 130).

That does sound like old paper, but if it does work OK, can give absolutely beautiful cold toned prints with such a smooth tonal range. The old graded paper had the best ever gloss surface; perfectly smooth. However, it may have lost a bit of it's power if it is really old, though if you like lith printing, it should be fine. Graded Seagull was one of the best ever papers for lith in my humble opinion.

Second the lith recommendation. Grab all of this paper you can get. It seems to hold up with age, as I got several boxes from a platinum printer who no longer had any use for it (!?!) , and they are all fine.

I have some grade 2 warm tone & it's beautiful in Dektol.
Where is this shop & do they post to Australia?

how i can check if the paper is expired?? ( i don t want to grab a buck of exipered paper)... compared to ilford in neutol wa the oriental seems to be a neutral tone........compared to foma rc the white surface of the foma is brightest...and colder..

I still have some boxes of Oriental Seagull, 1985, sitting on the shelf, most 11x14. I haven't used the old stuff recently.

This was my paper of choice for many years. Try it, if you like it, use it.

My take would be, "An added benefit is that when completely selenium toned a slight, but noticeable, purple color is developed." Some people call this the "eggplant" affect, and I loved it.

i used this paper exclusively for years.
back in the 1980s it was said to have
the highest silver content of all the papers
being sold .. i don't know if that was true or not,
but i just bought a few boxes from a fellow appugger
and i am looking forward to using it again!
