HELP! Film broke out of cartridge...

So I've been trying out my new-to-me Voigtlander Prominent, and today when I shot the last frame, the film must have come off the cartridge spool, now I can't rewind it. I know I can't be the first this has happened to, so what do I do?

Go into a darkroom, open the camera, then load the film onto a developing reel?

Thanks, but I don't have a developing reel, or a true darkroom. I'm thinking maybe bring the camera into the place that does the developing, and have them remove it?

Do you have one of the cans that film sometimes comes in? If so, roll the film up in the dark and put it in the can. Tape the top on the can and put on a warning note about exposed film being in the can.

go to any costco/local photo store and ask them to unload the film for you into a black film plastic can.

A dark-bag is only $10 or so.

Failing that, what I did before I had a dark-bag (and recently, when I forgot to bring it on a trip) is to wait until night, turn out all the lights, shut all the curtains, get a few blankets or quilts on the bed, then shove your hands under all of them as far as you can. It definitely gets hot in there, but it works.

If someone else is doing the developing, take it to them (assuming local). Most minilabs I know of have a changing bag and can sort this out for you.

Actually, probably the best advice ever.
Imagine this: being in a hurry, dabbling in the darkroom, turning of the lights (didn't even forget to turn of the safe light), found the camera, found a canister on the rack, took out the unused film and placed that back on the rack, opened the camera, wait -put on cloves first, carefully unwind the film from the camera, rolled the film carefully into a small roll that fits the canister, where did that cap go? Ah, there it is, closed the can, checked if it is really closed before turning the light on and mark this canister as EXPOSED, and .... ahhhhhhh - I got me a Fuji NPH400 canister instead of a Tri-X canister ... and it is transparent ... ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ...

Something like: boil water for 3 minutes, mix baby milk, stir for 2 minutes, ready to give it to baby .... PS: let it cool down first before baby drinks .....

empty under stair cupboard and close door fit a blanket to inside of door

or

crawl into bed head first and do it under heavy coat with arms in sleeves from the wrong ends.

seal ends of film can and label open only in dark room, get the process person to read the label while the tub iz still in your hand

If the film end is shattered brush out shards from camera focal plane shutters don't like shards...

note my chum opened an Ilford bulk box although it said don't in eight languages I wont tell you his web name.

I'm probably going to do this. My local lab is a good one, and I'm pretty sure they'll do it right. I'll let you know how it turns out Unfortunately, they only run B&W on Tuesdays, so I won't know until next week how it turns out.

I never try to shoot 36 exposures out of a film, the maximum I ever shoot is 34, because this once happened to me many years ago in the middle of a wedding shoot.

It was a roll of Forte B&W. First roll I've tried of it. Expired a few yrs ago. I'll only be shooting around 34 with the rest of the rolls.

It was more than 20 years ago Noel, I had a changing bag but no black plastic cassette container to put the film in with me it was Fuji film and theirs are transparent,, I had two bodys with me at the time, and had to finished the wedding with the other one.

Is all this crawling under the blankets getting hot and sweaty really necessary?

Just go into you darkened bedroom and let your eyes adjust for a couple of minutes. If light is coming under the door
then turn off the light on the other side of the door. Close your curtains and unless you have a streetlight outside your
window, things should be pretty dark by now.

If you cannot see your hand in front of you face you can bring the film out into the open on top of your bed without
any problems for a couple of minutes. Before I bought a changing bag I would load my developing reels in this fashion with
no problems. I'm more impatient now and I like to develop during the daytime.

Think about it. Could you meter the light in the bedroom at this level and what exposure would you need to get an image?

Getting sweaty under the blankets is for other activitiesand preferably not alone
