Hello and thanks for letting me join. I'm a full time professional photographer, author and teacher, with over 40 years experience, based on Valentia Island in County Kerry, Ireland.

I've recently gone back to my roots, working analogue with a few very old film cameras, including one or two that I bought for less than 20 euro. One of those was recently used to create a slideshow for an online music festival.

The fee from that job was partly used to buy a Topcon Horseman 970 6x9mm technical camera, which I got from Japan today! I've come here mainly because I already need help with it from you very experienced bunch of people!

Looking forward to learning a lot from you.

Thanks for the welcome guys, much appreciated.

To Ariston: I was Associate Editor of Cameracraft Magazine, published in the UK, for 8 years until I got sacked recently (cut-backs and a new publisher), full-time tutor with the Photography Institute, the world's biggest online diploma course in photography, for 5 years. I've written 3 books on photography and worked for National newspapers and magazines and large international organisations such as Pfizer and the Irish Government.

To Peter: I live on the Ring of Kerry, a stunningly scenic area, although it does tend to lend itself more to wider panoramic vistas than detail shots, which I will be looking for with my new (old) Horseman 970, shooting with B/W film mostly.

This is a short video of the Island I live on, that I made for the Chamber Music Festival a few weeks ago:

This is a slide show I made for the same event, using a Zeiss Ikon Nettar 6x6cm camera that cost me $15.

Stephen, good day from the extremely hot day here in the So Cal region of California. Welcome to the Photrio site.

Thank you very much. It's quite warm here, for Ireland in September, but a bit cloudy. I'm hoping for better light in a couple of hours to try out my new (old) Horseman 970, as in my Avatar.

Love the avatar and camera here, Stephen. As far as heat, we're suppose to see around 110 degree temps this weekend......UGH !

Thanks for the welcome from Canada, Andrew and Matt.

Also welcome from Canada, which if you go far enough, is also east of Ireland!

I think that Ireland is East of Canada but Canada is West of Ireland. I'm about as far West of Ireland as I can get - the Atlantic Ocean is 800m from my back yard. If I could see far enough in a straight line, I'd sight Newfoundland, apparently.

Andrew and I are 4,400 km west of Newfoundland. Ireland is 3,200 km east of Newfoundland. So going the short way around the world, we are about 7,500 km apart.
Going the long way (heading west from Vancouver) it looks to be about 17,000 km, although it is probably shorter if one heads north.
Either way, we are glad to be able to converse with you about our shared photographic interests.

Welcome Stephen, I am just up the road from you in Sligo.

Sure on a clear day I can see St. Johns and St Anthony and maybe even the Gulf of St Lawrence:happy:

Stephen, welcome to Photrio.

The stills version was better for me, although the motion version wasn't that bad, it didn't cut it as well as the still's one.

What is it with the various vertical stones, were they used for guidance in days of old, like they did in Iceland?

Mick.
