Thank you, Thank you!
I am in SW Georgia on the Flint River. I worry when the water rises.

I just acquired a some older Nikon gear. It is amazing how cheap it is nowadays. Depressing actually. As a result I only have digital images with the exception of some beginners wok taken some 30+ years ago. I plan to remedy that. The only swamp monsters are the gators and the occasional swamp rat of the two legged variety.

Thanks for the welcome!

We have Swamp Coolers out here in the California Desert. Water is hard to come by. As Mark Twain said, out West, whiskey is for drinking and water is for fighting.
Yes there are some great bargains out there in old Nikon stuff. bought film Nikon N70 (from the 1990s) with a 50mm F1.4 Nikkor (from he 1960s) for $20 plus postage. The Nikkor is perfect for my olde Nikkormat.

I spent a few years in the Sierra Nevada's. Lived in Mammoth Lakes. This is where most of my film was taken but I was not very knowledgeable at that time.....it's a long story. I bought the entire Nikkor line between 28mm to 300mm fixed lens except or the macros......for a faction of what just one lens would cost today. I spent some time in what is now the DV Natl. Park....mostly in the winter..

Not very happy with the keyboard action on this forum. It keeps dropping letters.

A swamp cooler will not work at all where there is humidity, so forget that in Georgia. We had them in New Mexico too. Very simple and cheap to run. We're in Flori-Duh now and I just marvel at people who used to live here and in Georgia (used to live in Savannah) back before there was A/C. Summers are the real deal here.

I agree, good old Mr. Digital has been a friend to us film shooters. Lots of great deals out there on gear. But I would venture to say it has almost killed off "real" photography. Hopefully it will come back, but I doubt it. By that I mean, most people have no idea what a good photograph looks like, nor do they care. As long as they can send a low rez selfie shot from their phones, they're happy. Hopefully Mr. Marty will be making some good photos to show.

No Big Foot here. There are some skeeters that would horrify you.....................and fire ants...................I hate fire ants. They are the most vile creature on earth. This is from someone who wears sandals and shoots in the dark.

Thanks again for the welcome.

Thank you!

So let me get this straight. This is a film only site. Another site I am on is large format only, another is (I think) all forms. Strangely enough the one with all forms is the least responsive site. Odd, I would have figured it wrong.

Welcome, and you are basically right.

Although people who shoot and print using other, traditional processes (e.g. cyanotypes, bromoils, etc.) also participate here as well.

Digital stuff creeps in at times, and is discouraged.

There is a sister site (DPUG.ORG) that welcomes discussion of scanning and hybid processes. It is much quieter than here.

Many people here have feet in both worlds, but honour APUG's limited focus. You are more than welcome here if you also shoot or use digital equipment - just refrain from talking about it much.

And generally, if you want to discuss some particular photographic content, it's best if it has at least some analog content.

Hope you enjoy your stay.

I've spent A LOT of time up around your old stomping grounds in the sierras and also Death Valley NP also. Look forward to seeing your latest photos with your non-digi gear.

Alas, I am not in the Sierras anymore. I miss it. I also miss Arkansas where I was raised and played for so many years.

Digital is fine and very convenient for some of the things I do. But, I prefer film. I like working with it. I like the way it forces me to think.
The payoff is when that developing tank is opened or that image comes up in the print developer. I have a lot to remember
and more to learn.

I am scanning old (30+ years) slides right now. I am currently working on those in from the Yosemite area. Perhaps I can post a few.

Thanks!

Welcome to APUG Marty! I spent the better part of the mid to late '70's just north of Valdosta at Moody AFB, or as the locals called it, "Moody Field". I agree completely with your assessment of fire ants! Nastiest creatures this side of hell!

Thank you all!

It was a great day to shoot today but I had other chores. I cleaned up the scrap wood in the spare room so I could move the table saw and other tools out of the bathroom. This was so I could begin to block off the window and secure the doors................so I can get all this darkroom gear out of my living room.

South Africa huh, tis a ways away. Sounds interesting.

Yes, I know Moody. Drove by there last weekend on my way to Florida to pick up and Omega D5 enlarger.

One good thing about living here is that spring comes early. The pear trees are in bloom.

Thanks again for the welcome.

welcome to APUG and say hello to Pogo for us. I too have the keyboard dropping letters. It started when I replaced my computer. I was running Vista OK but now I'm running Windws 8.1. Anyone know a fix for this?

I found the solution.

Go to "General Settings" on the banner above. Got to My Account on the left panel and select General settings, toward the bottom select the Standard Editor. It worked for me.

Thanks for the welcome, Alan.

I also have a Windoz 8.1 netbook, but I only use it as an off-roading GPS.

There are four ways to deal with it:
  1. Live with it
  2. See the previous post
  3. Revert to Windoz 7
  4. Switch to Mac OS
