Hi All,

New to the forum but certainly not photography.

I've been a full time professional photographer for the past 12 years, specializing in animals and lifestyle. I shoot digital exclusively for work/clients, but never bring my (digital) Canon gear anywhere with me unless I'm being paid to use it because it's such a PITA.

For personal photos I either use my iPhone 6s or Pentax film cameras, which I love because they are both freeing. It's interesting experiencing something so analog and something so digital at the same time. I'll often use both the phone and the analog camera to photograph the same thing.

I love making pictures but I'm pretty burned out on doing it professionally. It has become exceedingly difficult to make a living at, no matter how much talent or business acumen a photographer has. Digital images are commoditized, the price has been driven way down, and the competition is very high. It's a losing battle as far as my research shows me and I'm ready to jump off the ship before it sinks completely. I'm in the process of starting up a new business and decreasing my need for my commercial shoots.

There are days where I fantasize about selling all of my digital gear and buying a nice rangefinder and several lenses, a bunch of 35mm lenses and a medium format body and lens. I drool when I think of just how much film gear I could get if I sold my digital gear. My Canon 5D Mark III was one of the worst $3.8K investments I've ever made in my life (2 years of 'moderate' use and now the sensor is visibly noisy at 400 ISO and up, requiring noiseware to be run on every photo taken). I won't make that mistake again. Digital is such a racket.

I got my start shooting film 26 years ago as junior in high school, and did my own darkroom developing at that time. I loved the shooting part but hated the processing part (still true). One of the things I love so much about film is I don't have to spend hours in Lightroom and Photoshop afterward, which I've grown to dread in my 'day job', even though I have my workflow down to a science. I just want to make pretty pictures and be done with it.

I picked up film photography again last summer and am really excited at what the future holds in store in this arena.

I'm more interested in the creative aspect of photography then the technical aspect, and you will never find me spending time arguing about what the best gear is to use. The best gear is the gear that gets you away from your computer and out shooting.

Looking forward to meeting people here!

Well, there are some people who say that 400 ISO film is noisy too..., so nothing to worry about...

Ha ha, true.

Too bad I can't explain to my commercial clients "oh that? that's just 'film grain'". Ha!

Hi Jamie, welcome
New here as well and share your sentiments.
Spent a couple of too short days in your city last year and loved it and will be back one day!

Welcome Jamie...
I'm in south OC so we're 'almost' neighbors.

I, too, followed your path and am very happy no longer spending a moment shooting and an hour on the computer.
My biggest film challenge (besides time) is finding places to shoot.

Hi Jamie & welcome.

I cringe, hearing about what's happening to the pro shooter. I think there are quite a few here & w/ no small amount of talent. 'Seems a re-run of microsoft releasing 'Pagemaker' (html editor) and instantly everyone thought they were a web designer. I hope you connect w/ several other pros here & get your noggins together for how to survive or transition. I think you'll enjoy your time here.

Welcome to APUG Jamie! I really enjoyed reading your story. It reminds me of the time, many years ago (ok, maybe 10) where I seriously thought about getting into photography professionally, but even then I seriously doubted whether I could transition to digital and compete in a market where, even at that time, pros were feeling the effects of the democratisation of photography in a digital world. Needless to say, I stuck with teaching and continue to enjoy photography for personal use.

Welcome Jamie,

I'm in Oceanside, I usually like to shoot my film camera around Balboa Park or closer to downtown San Diego.

Blind Lady Ale house is a favorite for beer + pizza, Tiger!Tiger! too, DaoFu for Viet fusion. Lots of new places in the general region, that Beers&Cameras group does a good job of getting to new venues, you would probably fit in quite well with that group.

Where are you in the city?

Welcome to APUG, Jamie!!

I feel your pain - I'm an architectural photographer based in BKK and the $$$ rules. It's hard slog when you're up against the photographer who shoots "w,x,y & z" charging clients a pittance, or do it for "exposure".

Hang in there - shoot some wonderful film and get the love back; I can't do that right now personally, so (sadly) I've been shooting some personal projects d******y, just to keep my enthusiasm intact.

But when I get back to AU every year, I'm always shooting film like crazy - offsets the drought for the rest of the year (just!)
