Hi folks!

I just want to say what a pleasant discovery APUG is! I can thank Adam at SKGrimes right now for telling me about this. I called him about a lens issue with a Speed Graphic I just got my hands on.

Despite having spent almost 3 years reading about medium and large format, I don't even quite know how to load a 4x5 film holder yet. But I'm just not capturing what I want to with either 35 mm film or the Nikon D200 I just purchased. It's time for me to move up to bigger film.

I'm going to need some help finding local resources I need to get started.

I'm mostly interested in seascapes for the moment, and even before that, getting some hands-on to get me started. The really basic stuff.

Are there any Rhode Islanders (especially in South County) who can volunteer, trade, or charge me a modest amount to get me started? It's not practical for me to enroll in a Northern Rhode Island course right now.

Check out the "New England APUG" group under "Regional", and post your request there. Right now people are organizing a workshop on Cape Cod sometime in March....

My running joke is that anywhere in Rhode Island is within walking distance of anywhere else in Rhode Island. In reality it'd take too long to walk from end to end for any practical purpose, except maybe one of those charity walk-a-thons.

Although I'm in RI, I'm in northern RI and I know next to nothing about large format gear, so I'm afraid I can't offer any practical advice. Welcome to the group, though!

hey there

i'm in warwick ...
nice to see you here

not many large format resources here in rhodey ...
probably the best local resource is not here in RI but in boston --- ep levines.
they have a large supply of everything from cameras, to film to enlargers ...

have fun!

Welcome Seascape Man!

The New England APUG group had a LF workshop earlier this year, sorry you missed it, but I am sure that you will find the LF help you need, hope to see you at one of our gatherings.

Cheers, Krystyna

Welcome. As a fellow Rhode Islander I imagine it is more the expense of a taking a course in Providence rather than the distance that is the issue, but we are funny about taking trips out of our usual haunts. I'd be happy to help out if I can, I have a lot of years of LF experience, and it isn't rocket science. I'm sure you can get up and running pretty quick. Shoot me an e-mail when you want to get going. And John is right, EP Levine in Boston is the place to go in this area.
Happy New Year all--

Hi from a guy in MA, just a bit up the map. I've got family in W. Greenwich and a real love for your beaches and nature reserves. Great state! Funny thing about RI though is that the state is indeed tiny, but it takes forever to get anywhere there. I swear they planned all the roads to go around in circles so people wouldn't leave the state too quickly. Southern RI may only be 50 miles from Northern RI but the convoluted roads and the traffic make it feel like you're trying to go from LA to Seattle.

At any rate, welcome in. Apug is great and the NE section of this crowd is a lot of fun. The Speed graphic is a great camera to play with. Buy some cheap film and just go out and make mistakes! Then you can come on and complain about what went wrong. You'll remember the solutions better if you've had the problems.

Welcome from western Mass. Keep an eye on the New England Region section for get togethers and workshops. We have a great group of people and very helpful also.
