Hello everyone!
I've been lurking for well over a year and have been a member since last fall, so I decided I should probably come out of the closet and say hello.

My name is Julie, and I live in Salt Lake City, Utah. I'm a musician, and I moved here about 7 years ago (can't believe it's been that long!) for my job.

I always loved photography, and I took two semesters of photo (B&W darkroom) in college, and loved it, and always bemoaned the fact that I never could afford/get access to a darkroom. So about three years ago I took a short photo/darkroom class through the local community education program and now I'm hooked again. I currently take classes and do my printing at the Salt Lake City Art Center, although I am taking the summer off.

I also do vegetable gardening, but mostly just so I can make pickled things, and knitting, and I like cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. I love taking photos of snow, so I basically snowshoe so I can take pictures. I'm never quite as inspired in the summer, which partly explains my summer hiatus.

Anyway, thank you for all the wonderful information on the site, I never feel like I need to post a question because it's all there in the archives. And even if I never find an exact answer, there's tons of great reading anyway!

Julie

Welcome to APUG from vancouver.

Welcome Julie.
I used to live in Utah (SLC then Springville) but moved to Jersey a year ago. I miss the "Grand Landscapes" of the beehive state and the flyfishing

Alan.

Welcome Julie from western Massachusetts.

Welcome to the frey.

I'm down here in Lehi, I work on my garden, darkroom, and in the darkroom as well.

Do you have any work online? It would be nice to get to know you through your work as well.

Best to you,

Julie,

Welcome from NYC (actually, upstate NY in the "country" tonight in Copake).

Lots of UT APUG'ers around. And even p/time neighbors like I sometimes am when I'm down in Tucson.

Post pics, enjoy the fora etc.

Hi Julie, welcome from Hawaii. I'm glad you decided to introduce yourself. Welcome to the community.

Hi everyone,
Thanks for the welcomes.
Robert, I don't have anything online yet. I'm always disappointed with my print scans, so I haven't really done anything yet, it's on the list though. Also, the stuff I did for my portfolio for class is 11x14, too big for my HP all-in-one scanner. I may try to put something up later, though.
I actually met you a couple of years ago at your booth at the SL Art Festival, really loved your work!

Welcome y'all:smile::smile:

I am now arranging a class schedule for the Kimball Arts Center in Park City, Utah. I should have 6 to 8 classes scheduled in the near future.

I have no shows scheduled at the moment, but should have something coming up soon.

Best to you Kat,

Impressive Robert!
Do tell, what are these classes on exactly?
Speaking of exhibits, I'll be making an announcement regarding an exhibit here soon......

So sorry we missed your last party. My son broke has thumb and we were in the ER. I just talked with maria, she wants to have a BBQ at our house in Aug. I will post it in the regional forum.

Yay, I'm so glad to hear from so many Utah apugers!
Mt. Brian, I have learned a *ton* at the Art Center. Unfortunately, the advanced class is pretty heavily digital, (can I spell that out or do I have to asterisk certain letters?) but I learned a tremendous amount anyway. I actually don't think there's anyone who knows as much about both film and digital as Rodger does, it's really amazing. The lab techs are also fantastic, so it's a really great atmosphere. The second term of the class is about putting together a portfolio, so we spend part of the class printing (or if you're digital you can talk to Rodger about your issues) and then while the fiber prints wash, we watch videos about different photographers. I think that's my favorite part, actually.
It is a pain that it's the same lab and same lab hours that the U students have, so right before they have an assignment due, it gets really busy. But if I had my own darkroom, I'd miss the feedback I get from the lab techs. Someday I'll have my own place, but I have too much to learn to set out on my own.

I'd love to go out shooting anytime. I have to confess I haven't shot much this summer, other than some family pictures and pictures of my dogs. It aint' art, but they're cute! But I just got my Rolleiflex back from Harry Fleenor, so I'd really like to run some film through it, but I'm so put off by the heat these days. I'd really look forward to a Utah gathering, and I'd love to hear about any classes or shows going on!

Julie

Hello!

I've also taken the SL Art Center classes and totally understand what you mean about them becoming digital-heavy. I always thought it was a bit strange that I'd be standing in front of an enlarger listening to a teacher talk about Adobe's contrast tools, or something.

What is it with group meetings lately? I'm missing the NYC group because I'm going to Utah but then I'm leaving Utah before they have thier meeting. Crap!

Hi again,
The art center teacher told me he has collected every article he has and has ever written on B&W film for me, so I won't feel left out next term. Over the last year or so I've wondered what it would be like to read a book not about photography???
And, unfortunately, I have to miss the Apug barbeque, my husband got a week off and it happens to be over that weekend, so we'll be out of town. I'm glad he got some time off, but I will miss meeting everyone!
