Hello. My name is John, I joined over a year ago but I just transferred the link to this machine. I am from Salt Lake, I shoot all formats from 35mm to 8x10 but my first love is 4x5. My favorite subjects are fine art portraits and nudes on large format in black and white. I have been shooting for about 30 years and I dislike the recent attitude of "shoot anything and fix it in photoshop". This has lead to very poor quality in the work I am seeing lately. I don't care if someone chooses to work in digital but I am sick of spending 30 minutes setting up a shot with an 8x10 to have some pixel-head tell me I am waisting my time because if somthing is wrong he can "Shop" it later. Digital is not a substitute for good composition. I am glad I found this group.

Are there any other members in (or coming to) Utah?

Thanks, John.

Aloha from the great state of Hawaii. I am looking forward to seeing some of your images in the online gallery.

I second all your observations about the current state of photography, and I couldn't agree more. I'm not afraid of Photoshop, and not bothered by computers (I am a professional programmer by trade), but I don't want to spend hours in front of the computer fixing an image. Using PS to correct your images, which it could be done in camera, is in my opinion, the tool of the lazy. On the other hand, I don't mind spending hours in the darkroom; it just feels great to create a great image from my own two hands, rather than someones computer program.

Hi John, and welcome. You took the words right out of my mouth; no substitute for getting the thing right in the first place. We've gotta keep our standards.

I live in Provo, but do most of my photography in the Swell. The next couple weeks I'll be in the aspen groves above 7000 feet, as they are turning very early this year.

John and Bruce, Don't forget the Nov. 13th-19th FREE workshop at Zion National Park. If you drive like me, it is less than 5 hours from SLC. Many apuggers are going to be there.
